vragen for any anime artists on here!

Do u usually draw using a picture reference of using descriptions of both? If u draw (or can draw) from description, do u just need basic details on looks, of lots of highly detailed details (like details on body physique, facial structure, personality to do eyes since in anime a charries eyes sort of reflects there personality)?
