Due to cultural differences, less people donate blood in Japan than in many other countries. The Red kruis is one of several organizations throughout the world who accept blood donations and other contributions.
A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan at 2:46 p.m. on Friday, and a series of aftershocks have since followed. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the initial earthquake measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, while the U.S. Geographical Survey listed the earthquake's magnitude at 8.9. Tsunami waves have already hit Miyagi and other northeastern prefectures, and tsunami warnings have been issued for much of the Pacific Rim.
