42 Ninth Grade Students: One Can Survive.
Honorable Mentions Keita Iijima, Hirono Shimizu, Mitsuru Numai, Yoshimi Yahagi, Yoji Kuramoto, Sakura Ogawa, and Kazuhiko Yamamoto

10) Kayoko Kotohiki
What am I supposed to do now?
What am I supposed to do now?

I feel very bad for Kayoko because she feels very bad at the time of her death. She shoots an (unknown to her) innocent person dead, just to find out he was in love with her. Her devastated monologue after Hiroki's death makes me cry. She may die quick and painless, but that doesn't make up for the painful guilt she feels before her death.

9)Yumiko Kusaka and Yukiko Kitano
I'm so happy that we've been friends.
I'm so happy that we've been friends.

How can u not find this sad? They may have been rather oblivious, but they were only doing what was right. Yet they were brutally killed anyway. Each adaptation of their deaths has their own original aspect that makes it sad on its own; in the film, Kazuo decides to let Yumiko suffer some final pain instead of just killing her for everyone on the island to see. In the novel, they have it a bit better physically, but their innocent little conversation before their deaths always gets to me.

8) Shinji Mimura

Shinji's death is interesting. The thing that I find so sad about it is that he almost made it. If Kazuo didn't happen to be in the same zone as them, their plan could've easily worked and everyone on the island, including themselves, would've survived. Like Kayoko, Shinji suffers a lot of guilt in the novel as he accidentally kills the innocent Keita Iijima, leading Yutaka to no longer trust him. In the film, he witnesses his two best vrienden die and commits suicide to save the rest of his classmates from Kazuo. He's just a fantastic character with a very emotional death.

7) Shogo Kawada
And then, I'm glad I finally found true friends.
And then, I'm glad I finally found true friends.

Like Shinji, the thing that I find so sad is that Kawada almost made it. I mean, he managed to survive the whole game, and even saves two other kids, yet he still dies after the game's over. If that's not bad luck then what is? Another thing that really gets to me is that Kawada doesn't care he's dieing; he's so calm and collected. The only thing he cares about at that moment is the fact that he reached his goal; to avenge Keiko's death and to rescue Shuya and Noriko. And, of course, he's a main character so u easily get attached to him. This chapter made me cry when I read the book.

6) Mitsuko Souma
I just didn't wanna be a loser anymore.
I just didn't wanna be a loser anymore.

I'm probably gonna get some hate for this, but I find Mitsuko's death surprisingly very sad. Mitsuko is different than most of the black and white antagonists we're all used to. I'm not denying the fact that she was a cruel, cold hearted monster. If I had to choose, I'd rather be killed door Kazuo as he just murders his victims upfront whereas Mitsuko takes the time to plan it out and betray them. But what about the Mitsuko before the program? If she hadn't been put in these circumstances, wouldn't u feel sorry for her? Think about it; she had been raped door several men her whole life, all planned and allowed door her abusive alcoholic mother. She has no real vrienden as all her classmates hated her. She had been an outcast her whole life. Always an outsider...always a loser. There were two sides to Mitsuko; the heartless killer whom we all hate and the broken soul with the tragic backstory. The only time we see the latter side of her is her death, and that's where I begin to feel sorry for her. In the novel, she seems to finally feel remorse for all her victims. She is so confused to why she was so demented and decides to look back on all the bad things in her life. She dies being a tragic, heartbroken child, and the chapter is summed up with, IMO, one of the saddest lines in the book;
Mitsuko Souma has died. Physically? Just a moment ago. Mentally? Ages ago.

5) Yoshitoki Kuninobu
 SHUYA!
SHUYA!

So, so, soooo sad. IMO, if you're in a Battle Royale probably the worst imaginable death is a kraag detonation. Sure, it's fairly quick, but could u imagine the fear beforehand as it beeps? Nobu's screaming and grabbing onto his vrienden is just so heartbreaking. The thing I find so sad about his death is the class' reaction, mainly Shuya's of course. Just the look of absolute devastation in Shuya's eyes gets to me, and when he starts sobbing I cry myself, especially when he finds the picture. The recollection of Shuya's and Nobu's friendship in the novel is very powerful, I wanted to stempel, punch Sakamochi when he laughed at Shuya's crying.

4) Yuko Sakaki
I even forgot that they were all my friends.
I even forgot that they were all my friends.

Yuko's death is so sad to me for the same reason Kayoko's is; the guilt she suffered. Yuko had the best of intentions; she only wanted to protect her vrienden from whom she thought was dangerous, but it all backfired and they all ended up dieing, leaving her the only survivor. It went the exact opposite that she had planned. The sorrow and regret she felt is unimaginable, Shuya's reaction to her suicide is probably the same as the audience's.

3) Takako Chigusa
I think you're really cool, Hiroki.
I think you're really cool, Hiroki.

Probably a lot of people's saddest death. Chigusa has what I like to call an "Eponine death;" in the arms of the person she loves who doesn't love her back. We can all relate to Chigusa; a majority of us at one point in our life have all suffered from unrequited love. It's one of the worst feelings in the world. The thing is, Chigusa doesn't seem to care whether Hiroki likes her back of not, well, of course her preference would be that he does, but she globaal, algemene just wants him to be with her. She won't even admit to herself that she loves Hiroki, she doesn't seem to realize it until the flashback of him riding his bike. She just has a very classic death and it's a very sad, memorable scene.

2) Hiroki Sugimura
I've been in love with you, Kotohiki, for a long, long time.
I've been in love with you, Kotohiki, for a long, long time.

Hiroki's death is similar to Chigusa's in a way, but meer sad IMO. Hiroki knows he's gonna die; he doesn't even seem to care, he cares meer about Kayoko over himself. The only thing he wants to do before he dies is explain his feelings to Kayoko. He spends the entire time desperately searching for her, just to be killed when he finally does. I just find it so depressing, and Kayoko's reaction doesn't make it any less. Just globaal, algemene a very emotional scene; Hiroki's the epitome of a tragic hero.

1) Yukie Utsumi
 We were so stupid!
We were so stupid!

Some may agree with me, some may not, but I truly do find this the saddest death in the story, especially in the film. Yukie stays positive and keeps her head held high the entire game; she's probably the most hopeful character out of all of them. She has no doubt that she'll survive, she gathers all her best vrienden and is the mother hen of the group, comforting everyone else when they feel low. In her eyes, she's going to team up her vrienden and the boy she likes and they're all going to escape together. What would be a meer perfect ending than that? After Yuka dies, however, all of that starts to fade away. u see her desperately trying to convince her vrienden that it'll be alright, but IMO she was really trying to convince herself. As soon as Satomi grabs the gun it seems that Yukie's hope is all slowly melting away, and door the time she dies, it's gone. She dies a broken soul; kind of reminds me of Anne Frank in a way. She just has such a drastic change in her state of mind that it's just very, very sad. She is also an example of a tragic hero.
