Marge was stirring in her cooking pan and Cliff was solving a crossword puzzle, when they heard a car drive up their driveway. Marge stopped stirring and looked at Cliff who turned to the window.
They had received a phone call from their son in law last night. He’d zei Erin wanted to meet them. Meet them, as if they were strangers to each other.
Cliff moved the curtains and saw a car he didn’t recognize, but when Evan and Erin got out he signaled at Marge. “It’s them” he zei with a skipping voice. Marge left her food for what it was and hurried to the front door. She opened the door and before Erin knew what was happening Marge pulled her against her chest so tightly she had trouble breathing.
After a couple of minuten Marge reluctantly let go and studied her long lost daughter. “Look at you” she zei breathless. “You’ve changed so much”
“Marge, invite them in. They’re probably freezing” Cliff suggested.
“Right, I’m sorry, I’m just…” Marge staggered. “This is just so overwhelming. I can’t believe it’s really you” She let her daughter and son in law pass and Cliff closed the door. “I hope you’re hungry” Marge continued, while rubbing her hands from nervousness.
“We’re starving” Evan replied.
“Good, dinner’s almost ready” Marge commented. She led Evan and Erin to the keuken-, keuken and told them to sit down. “Cliff, can u put the pans on the table?”
“I’ll do it” Evan hastily offered and he walked towards the stove. Cliff and Marge went sitting opposite of Erin, who looked down.
“It’s so good to see you” Cliff zei hoarse and he lay his hand on Erin’s.
“Can u tell us what happened, sweetie?” Marge asked careful, as Evan put the pan with mashed potatoes on the table.
“Not now, Marge” Cliff warned her.
“You’re right” Marge replied with a small voice. “We should eat first, before the food gets cold” They all ate in silence for a couple of minutes, until Marge could no longer help herself. She put her means down and looked at Erin only, as if only they where there. “I’m sorry, but…I need to ask. Where were you? What have they done to you? Did they hurt you?”
“Marge” Cliff zei sharp.
“I have a right to know what happened to my daughter, Cliff” Marge snapped irritated. “I want to know why I didn’t get to see my daughter in years” She turned to Erin. “Tell me what happened, sweetie”
Erin turned to Evan for support, but he wanted to know the truth just as much as her parents did.
“I don’t know” she eventually mumbled, eyes on her plate.
“What?” Cliff now asked.
“I don’t know what happened” Erin repeated loud. She pushed her plate away. Marge reached out her hand. “It’s okay, sweetie. We’ll figure it out. We’ll help u get through this. You’ve been through a lot, but you’re with us now. You’re with people who care about you. Everything will be alright, I promise you”
Erin withdrew her hand and stood up angry.
“It’s not alright! I don’t even know any of you! I know I’m supposed to, but I don’t remember of recognize any of you. I just want to go home, wherever that is and I want the three of u to leave me alone!”
