In the books, the vampires that drink human blood can develope an ability of appearing in the form of animals. The animal that Damon chose to appear as was a large crow. I guess they wanted to add a similar ability to the Damon in the show. But later, they gave up this idea.

i know cause i have watched every toon and the kraai turns up because the kraai is a sign that damon is near so it appears when he does
