Because they were willing to give up everything for one another. John was willing to sacrifice his life, for example, to save Pocahontas' father (something that must have moved the latter greatly), and Pocahontas was willing to give up everything to be with John.

Never really saw them as a tragic couple since just because John was wounded (which pretty much every Disney prince went through at some point) and had to travel back home doens't make them tragic or doomed (especially when Pocahontas had a choice and could have gone with him or he could have come back to her), it was their unwillingess and inability to work out later that put an end to their relationship in my opinion. I think romance suits them right because while they were not strong enough to last, they shared beautiful moments and had feelings for one another.

PociandSmith picked Tragic:
maryksand: yes but all of the princesses got healed and lived happily ever after with their princesses. Being seperated in the 17th century with no mobile phones, phones or computers but only letters who can be delayed for four months or more is a big deal.

I think this couple is the most completed out of them all and that's why I love it.
First of all, they are tragic, obviously. The audience can never be happy for a long time, as after every happy moment between them, a tragic moment comes. Two grand examples (and probably climax):
1.Pocahontas and John Smith share a kiss, then Kocooum attaks, he is killed and John is sentenced to death.
2.Pocahontas saves John Smith, they hug, then Ratcliffe shoots John Smith.
Also, Destined. They were meant to be together, they seemed completed when the found each other, after all the whole "If I never knew you" song proves it. Smiths sings "...the missing part of me / and I'm so gratefull to you, I 'd have lived my whole life through, empty as the sky, never knowing why, lost forever, if I never knew you". Also, the dream and the compass!
Another one feature is Romance, obviously. Sharing two passionate and kind of adults kissed, hugs, and tell each other beautifull words. They were actually one of the few Disney couples, being in a realtionship before the end of the movie.
Also, kind of playfull, in "Colors of the wind" and their first meating, climbing on that tree or John Smith saying to Pocahontas "No, I am not letting you leave". And we have her looking at him angry.
Also sacrifice, obviously, she was about to give up her life for him, she took a bullet for her father and they both sacrifised their happiness for peace.

And last but not least
(the crappy sequel not counted)
Everlasting
"No matter what happens to me, I'll always be with you, forever".
That's what I get from the movie by the very end, following by the "If I never knew you" song, at the credits.
Pocahontas and John Smith, waving goodbye to each other in the Native America way shows what I mean. No matter where they go, no matter if they meet each other again (we don't know if the, because Disney is not history and the crappy sequel just doesn't exist) they will be together, loving each other, forever.
And intimate.
Not cheesy...

That made me love them.
