Disney Princess Article: Stop the Ariel bashing!

Ariel is my favoriete Disney Princess. Thus, I find it stupid for some fanbrats from some disney message boards (not this site, just Internet Movie Database and other Disney forums) to bash Ariel all because she is not like the other girls, especially Belle.

Complaint 1: Ariel loved Eric for his looks!
My Defense: Ariel fell in love with Eric because he was a nice guy. Remember the scene where Grimsby presented the statue to Eric to him? Ever wondered why Eric didn't like it? Because the statue made him looked pompous and snobby-which Eric isn't! Even Chris Barnes and my brother zei so!

Complaint 2: Ariel wanted to be a human so she could be with ERic!
My Defense: Ariel wanted to be a human way before Eric came into the picture. Remember the musical number, "Part of your World"? She has been collecting human objects because she is interested in the human world. During that song, she expresses how much she wants to be a human. The song took place before she met Eric.

Complaint 3: Ariel gave up her life for a man! Selfish tramp!
My defense: She is not selfish nor a tramp. Yes, she gave up her family for Eric. However, she could still visit her family door the shore. It's not like she moved to a different planet.

Complaint 4: She will be abused door Eric! She should have married Urchin!
My defense: the tv series is not canon to the 1989 film. The tv toon made it clear that Ariel and Urchin had a "big sister-little brother" type friendship. Eric is a nice guy; not a mean guy. He will not abuse Ariel. I think that Ariel got to know him door watching him from the ship and got to know better during her first three days on land. Yes, Eric and Ariel will have some quarrels but they still love each other-otherwise they wouldn't bother saving each other from Ursula.

How could u say that Ariel's romance with Eric wasn't anyhing like Beast/Belle's? The Little Mermaid was based on meer on family struggles, growing up, and letting go than romance whereas Beauty and the Beast was definitely based on romance, learning to change, and how to judge someone. Besides, Ariel and Eric were following Disney logic of romance.

boolander25 Well, she is a [i]little[/i] selfish. She never did say thanks to her dad and kind of just expected him to fix everything.

faya27 I have to disagree. She didn't expect her dad to fix everything. She really thought she and her father were doomed for when Ursula took control of the ocean. She also thought she'd never see Eric again since she got turned back into a mermaid. When her dad turned her back into a human, she was really surprised and smiled happily at her father, meaning 'thanks.' She even hugged him at the end, showing that she was grateful.

BelleAnastasia I disagree with you on a lot of points. You can't deny Ariel liked Eric for his looks. She was watching him and telling Scuttle how handsome he is. This is lust. So basically she stared lusting after the first handsome man she has ever seen. And about the statue, so what if he made a face? How could Ariel know he didn't like it, because it was pompous and snobby? Maybe it was too modest and not enough pompous and snobby for him. Ariel has no way of knowing that. Yeah, I agree at first she wanted to be human for a lot of different reasons. But once she met Eric all these reasons were not important anymore. Why didn't she go to Ursula before she met Eric? So yeah, by the time she went to Ursula, her main motivation to become human was Eric. Oh, come on, you can't say she's not selfish and not a tramp. Her father loved her so much. She had a caring a nice family, a lot of friends who loved her and she could do anything she wants underwater. But she was so self centered and self absorbed, that she couldn't see these things. She never thought about anybody else , just herself. She left her whole family and her friends, without caring how they will feel. And she didn't even know Eric well enough. And she made a deal with a sea witch. How stupid do you have to be to do that? So yeah, she is extremely selfish and also quite stupid. In the end it is really annoying how hypocritical she is. She didn't care at all for her father throughout the entire movie. And she was willing to tell him that she loves him only after he made her dream come true. But if he didn't turn her back into human, I guess she would have given him crap for the rest of their lives.

MelodyLaurel Well, I kind of agree with BelleAnastasia. Before she saw Eric, her wish of becoming human was to dance, to walk, to do what normal people do. Not chasing after a guy she barely knows. You can see after she saved Eric and reprised "Part of your world", the song's meaning seemed to change, because her motivations changed.

CuteDiana what BelleAnastasia meant, that you should stay where you are, with your family and friends without hurting them, because they are the ones who can make up for your passion, ambitions, and wildest dreams, you should stay at home and quit your dreams .. oh and you should act like you're 25 even if you are only 16.

disneyprince ^^haha, but seriously she didn't want to be underwater. Her family provided her many things, but those things did not make her happy. I'm going to give you a very general example. Let's say you dislike apples, but somebody provides you with all the apples you could ever need, and then when you tell them you don't like them, they make you feel selfish and ungrateful. Although it's nice of her father to provide these things for her, he truly wasn't listening to his daughter and definitely wasn't WILLING to listen to her. And because her father (who is a person she SHOULD be able to trust) would not even hear her love for the human world, she had no choice but to go to the sea witch, because honestly, from what we've seen of the movies, there are only 2 beings underwater capable of granting Ariel's wish: her father and Ursula. Well, since her father wasn't giving her what she wanted, she went to the only other person who could. It was either that or be miserable for the rest of her life, marry a merman she didn't love and live her life in denial (sounds kinda like a metaphor for gay men and women that have to hide because of our culture's ignorance).

BelleAnastasia But she's only 16 as CuteDiana said. When people are 16 they still don't know what they want to do with their lives. She's still immature, and cannot think logically.

CuteDiana ^people say Jasmine was 15 turning 16, Belle could be 17, Snow White was 14, and they all don't and can't think logically ?

loveandbeauty18 Do you realize that ariel (and belle) get the most love and are the most popular on fanpop! They're always in the spotlight while the others arent! So theirs not a lot of haters of Ariel. I wouldn't callmyself a hater or bash on her. Not a lot of people do! But I do thinkshe is selfish spoiled and shallow. Anything that starts with an s (LOL!). She's selfish because she never thinks about others or and never says thank you. She's spoiled because everythings never good enoughh for her and she always wants more. She's shallow because se she did like eric for his looks . She admired his statue because he looked good she even said it herself. The way I feel about Ariel is the way you feel about any ovverated movie character or person that's always in the spotlight and it gets annoying sometimes. Sorry I offended any fans out their.

CuteDiana lol you have no idea, true that Belle and Ariel are the most popular here, but there's Ariel haters more than Belle haters. and i'm not gonna discuss your reasons because we here talked about this like 976523745692783465872634857234872 times. and you're right about the overrated part, there's some popular characters that you DON'T like so you say that they are overrated, i don't think that Ariel and Belle are overrated, they deserve their fame, their movies were the best of the best, and it's not my opinion, TLM was a major hit and brought back the princesses line-up, if it wasn't for her who knows if there's any princesses now, BatB was the first animated movie ever to be nominated for best picture, i'm not a huge Belle fan and i still don't think she's overrated. not everything famous that you don't like is overrated !

BelleAnastasia Jasmine was locked away in a palace, she didn't have the freedom Ariel had. Also Jasmine ran away for like 1 day, but then came back, she didn't leave her father. Belle took her father's place as Beast's prisoner. This is a really noble and mature action. Snow White had no family. Her step mother wanted to kill her. So her only option was to run away. I'm not saying they can't think logically at all. Just Ariel made a lot of stupid and illogical decisions.

Beatlebop8 so what if Ariel was only 16. I'm sixteen and I have enough sense not to put my entire species in danger because of my selfishness. There is a limit and most people will automatically want to avoid someone like Ursula, but no not Ariel.

Time to take tally how the songs did – the following lijst is NOT solely based on my feeling. It’s based on the ranking the songs (and only the songs, not the score pieces) of the films got so far – I took the average of the placements the songs got and made a new ranking out of them. The fanpop opinions are based on picks. This is not the final rating – I’ll take a closer look at the scores, too, later on, before I make a final soundtrack ranking.
