Ariel and Pocahontas: who is meer irresponsible?

I'm writing this artikel because with all due respect to everyone's opinion I could never appreciate the double standards surrounding Ariel’s character with all the “she left her family behind because of a guy despite canon clearly stating she dreamt of being a part of a human world long before even knowing Eric exists” sort of statements. And I don’t really like comparing Disney girls and writing character A vs. character B kinds of posts, but I feel like sometimes it is the only way to make a point.

So I’m taking two Disney princesses that I really love: Ariel and Pocahontas.

Ariel gets a constant hate for not listening to her father, being dashing and a bit irresponsible. Because it is so “awful” that she tried to get to know a different world and culture and risked her own (not anyone elses, mind you) life for the sake of it like during the incedent with a haai in the beginning of the movie, all of it despite her father’s unfair and wrong prejudices that he tried to force on her and all of his daughters without even putting any effort into getting to know the world he hated so much, generalizing all the human beings in it and expecting all of his daughters to hate zei world as well (and then as they grow up to teach their own children to hate it, apparently) and stay away from it without even knowing a thing about it just because he zei so. Yet Ariel did not want to be so narrow minded and judgemental so she wanted to find out the truth - on her own. Ariel did her best to hold her family away from trouble and even when she made a deal with Ursula she took all the responsibility on her own shoulders: she was willing to face the consequences and pay the price if she doesn’t make Eric kiss her within 3 days and she would have never made that deal had she known it could have been dangerous for her father of her family. She did not willingly subscribe to putting her family in danger, the only person she was putting in danger willingly was herself, everything else happened because of Ursula’s plan she had no idea about (and call her stupid of dumb all u want, but the fact remains - she. did. not. know. that. How exactly she should have known she is a part of some evil chain of events that are supposed to follow once she gives her voice to sea witch and gets her legs of how it is connected to Ursula wanting to posess the ocean, may I ask?). Ariel gets the blame for her “shallow” love at first sight and for risking and giving up everything for “some guy she only saw once”, although her real love for Eric came when she bonded with him over a significant experience of saving his life and the stronger feelings developed only when they got to know each other when she was already a human. In fact, Ariel was never going to leave it just being a crush at first sight, she wanted it to be something more, she was ready and willing to get to know Eric and meet him in a mermaid form (as she says to her friends), without running away from home, before her father decided to destroy her collection she worked on for her entire life, punishing her for dreaming and having feelings every teenager is allowed to have. Ariel’s love interest, Eric was a down to earth charming prince who was a good person in every sense of that word (heck, the first heroic act of his that Ariel - and us - got a chance to witness was him nearly dying for his dog). Eric took care of Ariel when she appeared in his life as a mute girl who needed help despite him not being in love with her just yet and still wanting to find the one, the girl with gorgeous voice. Eric is a part of the “opposite” world to the mermaid world, he has no idea about Ariel’s world of how it all works, he has no idea about the kind of deal she had with Ursula of who the hell is Triton, but the very moment he finds out that the love of his life is a mermaid (pretty sure it’s a rather shocking news to process in few moments, but he handles it pretty well) he rushes to help her and her family and fights door her side against Ursula despite having a very good chance at dying and in the end sets Ariel and her father free from the sea witch door destroying her. Eric nearly died twice because the sea had nearly taken his life and still he managed to find the beauty in Ariel’s world, accept her past as a mermaid no matter how crazy and freaky it might have been for a guy of his years to face so much in one dag and be greatful to her father (a king who not meer than a dag before hated all the humans including him) for everything he did for them. Ariel and Eric end up together because they are willing to accept each other and each other’s worlds.

And then we have Pocahontas. The movie starts with her behaving pretty Ariel-like: when she needs to be where her father wants her to be, she prefers to spend her time somewhere else enjoying dangerous activities because she is just as free spirited as Ariel. Only Pocahontas doesn’t do it because she wants to explore some new world of culture and put an end to prejudices surrounding it - she jumps down the waterfall because it is so fun! She risks her life and ignores her responsibilities - for fun. And then at some point of the movie her love interest is introduced. zei love interest openly came to her and her father’s land with his people in order to posess it, willing to kill anyone who refuses to play door his rules of decides to rightfully defend their land. He is armed and dangerous because he knows - “savages” might be out there and for him a savage is any person who is not like him. His first meeting with his future “soulmate” takes place when he directly aimes a gun at her - because obviously she might be another savage who needs to either co-operate of die. Then he is smitten door her gorgeous looks and decides to be meer nice to her than he would have been had she been some moody and not so pretty of welcoming male “savage”. Basically, just few hours after they just meet, Pocahontas starts contacting with a guy who nearly shot her and who - as she clearly knows - has come to her land in order to take it away from her people, from her family. But it is all ok as long as she sings him a song about the colors of the wind while he tries to shoot a beer (is it some weird fetish, Smith, aiming at everything that moves?) and then shows him the places he wanted to posess and own door forcing her people to agree to terms of his people of to die. She communicates and opens up about her land to a guy who wanted to take it away. Who wanted to make her family and her people play door his people’s rules. Who was willing to kill any of them if he finds it necessary. She believes she can change him but she has no garantees. Pocahontas willingly puts her family in danger door seeing Smith. Yet she is still sneaking around with him to have passionate kisses and secret dates. It ends with one of her people being shot to death door Smith’s best friend. Now, as contrived as Smith’s sudden change of mentality is I’m going to accept that. I’m accepting his changes because they are canon. Apparently, through the course of 1 of 2 days he suddenly decided that people who live on that land are not savages but actually nice folks who talk to spirits and trees. He doesn’t want their land anymore, how decent of him. He doesn’t want to posess it of to force those people do something they don’t want to do. Fine. Sorted. But does it undo everything that happened? Does it undo the fact that Pocahontas repeatedly put her family and her people in danger - which resulted in one of those people being killed - because of her crush on a cute blonde guy who started out as a narcissistic posessive jerk with a clear intention to make her and her people do what he wants? No. And in all honesty, if some guy came and brought some people that would cause any harm to my family of friends, even if he ended up being injured door trying to prevent some of those harmful acts from the side of one of HIS people (in Smith’s case he used to be Ratcliffe’s man and was fully aware of what sort of a person Ratcliffe was and how was he going to act if the “savages” refuse to give away their land), my farewell words to that guy wouldn’t be: “I’ll always be with you, forever”. No, instead I would tell him that if he ever comes to my land again with a crap like this of brings some people who do any harm to people I love again, I would take his gun and shove it up his stupid ass.

Now, what I wrote isn’t my intention to bring down Pocahontas, god knows I love the girl. But I’m trying to highlight the obvious double standards surrounding Ariel’s character and how each and every single mistake she makes is viewed as some horrible crime whereas when it comes to other princesses, their intentional stupid things are usually being overlooked and they are far from getting the same ammount of judgement.

tiagih Ariel is a fish trying to get close to a human. How can you compare that to a human getting close to another human

maryksand Ariel is a mermaid, and it is different from fish. She feels and thinks just like humans. Her communicating with Eric was interacting with someone from a different world, just like it was for Pocahontas. The difference is that Pocahontas was aware of the risk and Smith's intentions regarding her land whereas Eric never expressed the desire to posess the sea and take it away from her father and sisters.

tiagih John Smith was in it for the adventure not the claiming of a new world, that was his employer. Mermaid fish....they make babies the same way (according to legend). Pocahontas may have been sneaky when she was seeing John but she suffered for it. Ariel was only thinking of her self on her adventures, she never got reprimanded for it

maryksand Smith was a part of Ratcliffe's group that came to that land with a defined purpose to posess it and take it for themselves (and Ratcliffe declared the land to be a property of English men right after their ship arrived there) and Smith was not only entirely aware of it, but willing to take part taking that land away from those it belonged to and kill people - "savages" - if they disagree to play by his rules or would rightfully fight him and hispeople protecting their land. He knew what he subscribed to whether he cared about owning that land or was just seeking for another adventure. Smith seemed very enthusiastic when talking about how he and his peope would teach the ignorant "savages" how to live and how they would build houses and roads on that land turning it into another London so he definitely had a goal of participating in taking a part of that land for himself. And he openly stated all of that to Pocahontas and yet she still kept sneaking around with him. She did not pay for that nor did she face the consequences - Kokoum did by dying. She did not get hurt and she did not lose anything and in the end before Smith was shot she got things turning out exactly the way she wanted. Smith being shot doesn't count as consequences because it had nothing to do with their affair at all.

maryksand Pocahontas was called foolish by her father and Ariel got basically called insane by her father AND he destroyed her entire collection which equals a huge psychological trauma and emotional abuse because she worked on it for her entire life. Ariel got cruelly punished for her interest to human world yet Pocahontas was only called foolish after her crush on Smith led to Kokoum's death. Kokoum's death was just a horrible thing that came out of Pocahontas' irresponsible behaviour, but it was not the consequences that SHE faced, she ended up dying because of Smith's people. "That doesn't make him a bad person you know, ignorance isn't a sin its not like he threatened to kill her because she was a savage." - Smith was willing to kill people because of said ignorance which does make it a sin and should have at least been a sign for Pocahontas to think twice before having any contacts with that person who openly stated he came to her father's land with his people, being armed and willing to come across violence, to posess it. He was not a bad person, but he had his goal and said goal was made pretty clear and Pocahontas was entirely aware of it and what his people were about yet she still kept sneaking around with him.

Have you ever even experienced or read about TRUE psy trauma. These are cartoons, don't try to apply psychology to every aspect of it. " - firstly, yes, I AM aware of what does it mean to endure a psychological trauma and what can be count as emotional abuse and what consequences said emotional abuse from the side of your parents can have and yes, I did experience it myself when it comes to my own family and I don't think you should claim that I don't know that when you don't in fact know anything about me. Secondly, there are different types of emotional abuse and when your father scares you to death by being so angry that he literally blows up all your stuff (despite you begging him to stop) because you dared to have a different outlook on certain things and dared to be rebellious at the age of 16 it very much counts as verbal abuse. " - I'm not saying it did not hurt her to be called like that, but Ariel too was called out by her father so it's not just Pocahontas who faced that kind of judgement. It still does not equal facing real consequences for your actions. Parents call their children foolish on regular basis even without said children indirectly causing someone's death like it happened in Pocahontas' case with Kokoum. It is merely you not commiting a crime which definitely doesn't add you any points. Pocahontas was aware of Smith and his people's intentions when she was seeing him and yet she still kept seeing him.

tiagih Call me a mean person but Ariel got what she deserved. I don't know about you but I think Tritin was just desperate because he thought and feared for Ariel's life. Do you think spankings are emotion or physical abuse? I can't blame him for wanting to protect his daughter from danger. I assume that of Ariel was just a curious soul but was still obidient to her father he wouldn't have to be drived to an extreme action. I am under the impression that you think Ariel is this wild and free spirited person who only rebelled because she was being caged. I see Ariel as this child who has little to no regard of anyone but herself, and when someone holds her back from being reckless she just pushes back without thinking of others

maryksand I don't think ANY child deserves to be driven to the kind of fear and despare Ariel was in when Triton destroyed her collection she had been working on for her whole life nor do I think she did anything to deserve it. Falling in love is not a crime even if as a parent you don't approve of your daughter's choice. Being rebellious at the age of 16 isn't a crime either. Ariel learnt to accept the fact that her father will always be against her desire to get to know the human world and so she kept exploring it on her own and it wasn't untill that incedent with him destroying her collection when she pushed him away by running from home and going to Ursula. I agree however that we most likely see Ariel's character differently. Although I never thought she was being caged, more misunderstood, but it doesn't justify some of her actions that's why I do think she was selfish in some ways, but I don't think she was more reckless than other princesses and definitely not more reckless than Pocahontas for all the reasons I've stated above.

IsaacKuo Ariel DOES care about others. She's simply used to somehow saving the day no matter what. This is very typical of daring male heroes, like Captain Kirk. Ariel gets her best buddy Flounder in a dangerous situation--which is really common for boys, by the way--but she's able to save him from the shark. Ariel is sort of to blame for Sebastian getting in trouble, but she's able to save him also. It's more or less Ariel's fault that Eric got tangled up with Vanessa, but she's able to save him from that wedding--with the help of her friends. And of course, Ariel unwittingly gets her father in trouble. As is her pattern, her natural instinct is to fight Ursula regardless of her overwhelming power. She isn't able to defeat Ursula on her own, but things did work out with the help of her friends and Eric. Really, this is a lot like daring male heroes like Indiana Jones or Captain Kirk. They take daring risks, and always somehow cheat death in the end. It's actually exceptional when it fails to work out in the end (as in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn).

She makes her father worry about her safety because of how reckless she is, she goes to find treasure where there are sharks that can kill her, misses an event that was used as a way to present her sisters and her talents (hers being the one that was most important), and she consults a witch just to spite him for protecting her. I am not saying Ariel is evil but seriously, how can a child who is the most loved by her father and practically everyone just blandly leave and risk her family for some crush? She never thought of "Ursula is evil I should stay away from her". NO she finds her and even ignores her friends who are telling her its a bad idea why?....for the sake of a guy who she only thinks of as handsome. " pocahontas was what I can say ignorant and determined. When you say reckless it can imply that you did something with not real thought to the future affects of your choice. SHe did what she did for a reason, her family and her people were her motivation, and she thought about the future of her decisions alot. Ariel didn't do much thinking about her actions thus we call her reckless IsaacKuo ok, Ariel may CARE for others but she doesn't think about them until she puts their lives in danger. Which is more important preventing a dangerous situation from happening to your friends or being able to save them when danger comes. If she had thought more of her actions alot of dangers could have been prevented. Prevention is better then a cure, my father would say

He crossed the line when he destroyed her collection and if you assume he just backfired because of Ariel putting herself in danger by not listening to him and making him worried then Ariel backfired as well when she went to Ursula. Triton and Ariel had obvious issues in their relationship and both were to blame. I think by the end they were able to work through those issues because Ariel apologized to him and made it clear she never, EVER intended to put him in danger and Triton learnt to accept her wishes and feelings and realized that she has grown up enough to decide where or with whom she belongs. And if she felt better being a human then he had to let her go and he did. NO she finds her and even ignores her friends who are telling her its a bad idea why?....for the sake of a guy who she only thinks of as handsome." - this is where we're going to go around in circles because I think it was made clear in the movie that Ariel left the sea for number of reasons and Eric was just one of many reasons, but not the only one and not the main one especially since the movie introduced Ariel's desire to be a part of a human world from the very start, long before she even saw Eric , with her collection being big enough to imply that she had been working on it for her entire life. It wasn't before Triton destroyed all of it she decided to go to Ursula. She did not go to her before that, she did not intend to go to her before that, but after her father showed her in a rather brutal way that he was never going to accept her feelings and interests, she felt like she had no other choice than taking an action in her own hands. And when she went to Ursula she did in on her own, telling Flounder and Sebastian to stay away and not intending to put any of them in danger. "pocahontas was what I can say ignorant and determined. Ariel didn't do much thinking about her actions thus we call her reckless " - Pocahontas' family wasn't her motivation when she sneaked around with Smith and put her friend Nakoma in an uncomfortable and frightening situation when she told her to not tell her father about her going out with a handsome blonde guy who was a part of the gang that intended to posess their land. She knew about the risks and yet still did it because she wanted to go on those dates with Smith and as a result one of her people died. Pocahontas later acknowledged that she was wrong just like Ariel acknowledged it when she apologized to her father. But the difference is that Pocahontas was entirely aware of the risks because she knew what Smith was up to whereas Ariel had no idea about Ursula's intentions, she only knew that Ursula was evil enough to keep her as a prisoner if she fails the deal, but Ariel couldn't know about Ursula's plans on Triton and the sea, unlike Pocahontas who knew about Smith and his people's plans to posess her land.

CyberFive A very insightful and well written article and I agree with many of your points, even though I also like Pocahontas. I personally never understood the Ariel hate and I think this article, as well as the arguments you've made in the comments section, prove that you've taken the time to carefully analyse both films characters and form up reasonable defences on Ariel's behalf that people annoyingly seem to disregard without putting any effort into the point they're trying to make. Also, I don't like how people think that Eric became the only reason why Ariel went to the surface to begin with, because they've clearly forgotten her desire to be a part of that world before she knew he existed. How do they not know that Eric may have been an added bonus for her? Doesn't anyone remember the scene where they're both touring the kingdom and she's seen interacting with things and exploring (something she already wanted to do). To me, what that scene shows is that Ariel was still interested in the world she strived to be part of and that Eric was more or less an added bonus. maryksand ^ Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments as well as the links - browsing through them was definitely an enjoyable experience considering the author of the essays provided constructive analyses and objectively valid points. This article of mine was specifically designed to revolve around the two princesses I love in order to avoid being biased (although admittedly when it comes to conveying a personal opinion subjectivity is essentially unavoidable). Ariel is particularly misunderstood, although Pocahontas does get her fair share of flack as well due to her motives often not being processed and grasped in their entirety and examined from the variety of angles.

CyberFive ^ I just love reading what you have to say, because I know for a fact that the thoughts and feelings you share will be well written, well focused and analysed, and even to an extent, thought provoking in terms of the evidence you give. I've also read a few of your thought/opinions on your Tumblr regarding anything Disney-related and I've gotta say they are also very well thought out and well understood and it is such a joy to read them ;-) P.S. Have you watched the Nostalgia Chick's review of 'The Little Mermaid'? I haven't seen it myself but from what I've heard about the review, it's not very positive and I dare not look into it.

maryksand That's incredibly flattering to hear:) As for the NC's reviews while not having yet gotten around to watching them I do plan on checking on some in the near future. Not expecting anything exceptionally revolutionary seeing as the vast majority of home made self proclaimed Disney critics bring up the same exact points over and over basing them on surficial and largely insufficient examination of plot points and no regard for context or established canon hence most of the Disney related analyses come off as inconsistent and lacking insight and detail, however, it's still worthy of being exposed to different points of views regardless of whether they are presented thoughtfully or approached superficially and provide no constructive observation.

AudreyFreak Well shoot. I love Pocahontas but I can't really argue with all that. I will say though, that passive as she is, Pocahontas did try to fix her own mess though, which Ariel didn't really, as Swanpride I think pointed out in that Merida vs Ariel article.

wavesurf I differ a bit. Ariel did act sooner to correct her mistake, while Pocahontas waited and waited and waited around until the last possible moment to do something ( very reminiscent of Elsa's " I can't!" phrase to Hans when he asks her to stop the eternal winter). Ariel gets some help from Eric to fight off Ursula, but Merida's mom got rid of Mor'du. Merida didn't defeat him herself. So, just because you get help defeating a villain, doesn't make you a weakling. Ariel should not get shade for getting some help, when other princesses got lots of ASSISTANCE, too.

maryksand AudreyFreak I do love Pocahontas and that's partially the reason I picked her for this comparison as to avoid being biased. As wavesurf pointed out, Pocahontas didn't bother cleaning her mess - created because of her knowing association with an admitted murderous racist (who, unlike Eric, was a genuinely terrible person in the beginning of the movie. And it is a horrendously toxic message to send that it's woman's job to fix a well established bigot who considered said woman's cultural background and the people of said background - her family included - to be inferior and unworthy of being treated like human beings. Who actively tried to hurt and kill - if necessary - her friends and family members to claim their land. Which is not comparable to Eric and humans eating fish because it's a part of a food chain that sea creatures also subscribed to. I.e sharks eating smaller fish and attacking mermaids). Pocahontas waited until John's execution day to even do anything (prompted by Grandmother Willow). And it was John who ultimately had a redemptive moment by shielding Pocahontas' father from the bullet. Conversely, the moment Ariel realized her actions affected Triton and Eric she tried to fix it, sabotaged the wedding (her friends only helped her because it was Ariel's choice to take those actions and she never forced them to help. She outright told Sebastian earlier that he could stop following her and even tell her father on her, like he already did once), reclaimed her voice, apologized to Triton and tried to protect him with HER life (Ursula only failed to kill Ariel in that scene because Eric distracted her with a harpoon - and moments later Ariel ended up saving HIM yet again).
