Where in the world is gildarts during this while the whole tartarus crisis is going on? I mean I know he is a loner but....mabye I forgot something in the manga

After Makarov was made as the 4th master of fairy tail, he then decided that Gildarts was going to be the 5th. However Gildarts didnt want to be the master so he re-made Makarov the 6th master. While Gildarts was the master he demended 2 things (for Makarov to be the 6th master and for Laxus to be a member of fairy tail) then he zei he was going travelling for a while and he wanted fairy tail to be number 1......and we havent seen him since.
