Horcruxes are a very delicate subject at Hogwarts, owing to their evil nature. However, in light of recent events, I have prepared this lesson as a basic introduction.
Horcruxes are containers that hold part of a wizard's soul. Very few wizards who make a Horcrux make meer than one. Lord Voldemort was alone in this respect. Dividing one's soul in half takes a terrible toll on thed wizard. Only the truly evil rip it meer than once.
One makes a Horcrux door commiting an act of unspeakable evil. Usually this is murder.
Destroying a Horcrux is as hard as making it. It isn't enough to destroy the container physically. The object must be destroyed beyond magical repair. Fiendfyre and basilisk venom are two substances guaranteed to destroy a Horcrux.
The object itself could be almost anything. However, Horcruxes are not like Portkeys: they are not "garbage." A Horcrux contains part of the wizard's soul, thus it usually has deep personal meaning to the wizard. Below is a lijst of Voldemort's Horcruxes and what the objects meant to him.
-the diary. As Salazar Slytherin's heir, he was able to control the basilisk. This may have been his first. It allowed him to continue controlling the basilisk.
-the ring. Set in the ring was the Resurrection Stone. It is likely Voldemort did not know it for what it was. It had belonged to his grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt.
-the cup. He had procure this soon after leaving school. He had a deep attachment to Hogwarts, as it was his first real home. Having something from each of the founders appealed greatly to him.
-the locket. This belonged to his mother.
-the diadem. This belonged to Rowena Ravenclaw, until her daughter Helena took it. She had hidden it.
-Nagini. Voldemort loved snakes. He was a Parselmouth, able to talk to snakes. He and Nagini could be zei to almost have a relationship.
-Harry Potter. On the night he went to destrfoy the Potter family, his Killing Curse backfired. door making six Horcruxes, Voldemort had made his soul very unstable. When the curse backfired, his body was destroyed. A bit of his soul latched onto the only living thing left in the house.

Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our land, there is none meer curious of meer deadly than the Basilisk, known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach gigantic size and live many hundreds of years, is born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from itsdeadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it.
