Even Perez Hilton sometimes compares these shows. I like both, but prefer HIMYM. There are many simple reasons why they are different, so here are just a few:
1) 5 vs 6: This may seem extremely minor, but it is a very different dynamic. The plot lines of vrienden episodes often (but not always) follow 3 pairs of the vrienden doing various things together. On HIMYM there seems to be meer intermingling of plots (in my opinion).
2) Inspiration: HIMYM is loosely based on Carter and Craig's lives. They are the creators of the toon and the idea started somewhat autobiographically.
3) Lack of live audience: HIMYM doesn't film in front of a live audience, so there is much meer natural pacing in the show. Characters laugh at one another more, and there are fewer awkward pauses. It's a new age of sitcoms.
4) Narration: This is obvious. Ted narrates the whole thing, making him (loosely) the main character. vrienden is at least supposed to be pretty equal.
5) Backgrounds: Barney and Lily are from the New York area, but the other three characters are from Ohio, Minnesota and Canada. This provides a whole range of jokes and references. In vrienden all the characters are originally from the general New York area.
6) Easter Eggs: vrienden didn't really have the same technology available to it, at least not in the beginning. HIMYM actually creates most all of the websites they mention on the show, including Tedmosbyisajerk.com and Barney's blog.
7) Flash Forwards: vrienden has a lot of great flashbacks, but HIMYM also has amazing flash forwards. Since the setting is a narration of "the past," HIMYM isn't afraid to reveal things about the future as they are already set in stone.
8) High Fives: vrienden and HIMYM both have catch phrases of gestures as the case may be, but HIMYM has many meer inside jokes, and the variety of high fives is legen-wait for it-DARY! LEGENDARY!
So that's my fun silly list. Feel free to add in the commentaren if you'd like!
