“Whaaat?” Lisa spoke after a few minuten of complete blackout.
“I said… I’m a divorced jerk.” Hugh repeated with a smirk.
“How… why?” Lisa barely spoke.
“Well… I need u to understand something first. When I tell u what I’m about to tell you, promise me u won’t be disappointed.” Hugh whispered.
“Disappointed of what?” she was confused, so confused. How could she possibly be disappointed of him getting divorced?
“This is what happened last month.” Hugh began explaining.
“Hugh reached his phone and pressed the voicemail button. There were tons and tons of messages, he skipped a few, decided to listen to them later, he deleted some and then he got to one message in particular. It was his wife.
And just then it hit Hugh that he hadn’t contact her since the award show. He knew he was in so much trouble, but he didn’t know just how much.
“Hello…yes, Hugh… so I’m just calling u to tell u my lawyer will be talking to yours anytime soon, since u don’t return any calls, of text messages and I know u will hear this too late, I’ll cut to the chase. Thank u for all the great years u gave me, thank u for our children. But I just cannot live like this anymore. The night I asked u if u were happy and when u responded the way u did…” Jo started sobbing, “I just… I don’t want to be selfish. u deserve to be happy, and …and so do I. Goodbye Hugh.”
There was a beep and the voicemail kept playing the volgende messages. Hugh just sat there, on his couch, volgende to the phone. There, it was out again. Jo was the one who asked for a divorce. Not Hugh. Again, Hugh wasn’t the one who was strong enough to do it. He realized he’d been weak for too long. Everything that happened happened because he was weak. Every time someone made it easier for him. First Hugh couldn’t end his relationship with Lisa at the time he could, when he knew it wasn’t right and wasn’t yet in love with her. ‘Weak!!!’ Hugh yelled at himself. Then when he fell in love with Lisa, he couldn’t leave Jo. ‘Weak!!’ When Lisa left him he couldn’t go after her because he was ‘Weak!!’ Then when he found out she was pregnant and terminated her pregnancy he couldn’t bare with it, he couldn’t bare to find out he was the reason she did it. Because he was too weak! So he stayed in his home, drank scotch and tried to forget what happened. Because that’s what weak people do. And then finally, Jo asked for a divorce. Again, he wasn’t the one to initiate it.
He was a weak person. And he desperately wanted to change that. So he decided to do it immediately. He decided to do something radical. So he called the mail service and asked for delivery. That night, Hugh sent Lisa the necklace.”
When Hugh was done telling her what happened Lisa heavily breathed out. Then she started crying.
“I… I know u would be disappointed that I wasn’t the one to ask for a divorce…” Hugh continued.
“I…” Lisa started but couldn’t finish cause tears wouldn’t let her. So instead she moved from keuken-, keuken to her living room, settling herself on the couch. Hugh followed.
“Lisa… we can… I want to be with u again. I don’t want to hide, I want everyone to know how happy I am with you. I…” he didn’t know if he should say this so soon, “I… Lisa, I want us to try and have a kid together.” He zei with a smile and tears forming in his eyes.
And there they were, sitting on her couch, crying. At that time already tied together in a hug. Lisa was first to break a spell and pull out from it.
Hugh looked at her, a little confused, a little bit excited. However, the look in Lisa’s eyes was the same. Hugh didn’t know what was hiding behind those eyes, no happiness, no disappointment, no anything. There was something, something he had never seen in her eyes before. He was afraid to admit it, but he could see she was broken. Although the reason he though she was broken for, was proven to be completely different when Lisa finally spoke.
“We can’t be together…” she sobbed, “I… I just singed a contract to get back to the show.”
