I think Shadow and Maria were just very close friends(the scientists probably just saw Shadow as an experiment and Gerald was probably too busy to give Shadow much attention, leaving Shadow and Maria to hang out with each other). I find the idea of Shadaria kind of disturbing since they're not the same
