An indifference to her character would make sense if she were a boring one or one that did not do much--if that were the case I'd say she's rated in the middle/just right. But that isn't the case, Morgause actually had a very startling and heavy impact on the show...she was the one that harbored Morgana to the dark side.
In general Morgause is a strong character. I can't speak for everyone but I just loved her She was a striking addition to the show. And she left a strong impression. She's a badass female character who took charge and got shit done. She was confident, smart, and manipulative. Overall she's a great character.
She deserves more love and discussion than she gets. I also feel like the writers could have done more with her. But really I think she should get more credit than she does.
Between the lack of fans, polls, attention (hate or love), and discussions--especially since she's an epic charter--I think it very safe to say that by definition, she's an underrated character.
@MerlinFanATL I hope it doesn't seem like I'm singling you out here, because that isn't my aim. You're simply the only one who commented after picking 'overrated'. Which I can actually appreciate since 'overrated' is winning and no one else seems to want to speak up and explain--not that they have to or anything, I just think it would be nice for discussion's sake.
Anyhoo, like/dislike doesn't = underrated/overrated. Just because you like a character doesn't mean they are underrated, likewise just because you don't like a character doesn't mean that said character is overrated.
Overrated is when a character gets a crapton of discussion either positive or negative. Up until now I really haven't seen either for Mo--much less negative opinions.
As for her bringing Morgana to the dark side; as you mentioned Merlin played a role too. But I think the biggest culprit is Uther; he made Morgan feel like she had no other choice. It was kill or be killed. And since she had little to no control over her powers the risk of exposure and death was so high. Morgause offered to teach her control and to understand what was happening to her as well as protection which is very appealing in comparison to what Uther offered. The fact that she was scared and already leaning towards hating Uther is what made her so easy to bait in. If Uther hadn't made her feel unloved (for who she was) and threatened, then she probably wouldn't have gone bad.
Worry not, your response made a lot of sense, and I did like hearing the opinion from the other side. Honestly I've been itching for a reason to talk about Morgause and you gave me one. :P
