Because if we could Notch would have to add a new layer beneath bedrock and so on and so forth or, Notch wanted a...... blockade to stop people from going to far or, Notch was just lazy and didn't bother to add another layer!
Well part of the game is based on real life so can we really brake bed rock in real life? No we would brake into the earths core and the earth would be well boom pow capowie So in conclusion minecraft is in the fantasy genre yet they put life-like features in the game
ok, this is just a theory. I think we can't brake bed rock because, the Neather world ids under the main world, have u ever dug up in the Neather?

That's a really good theory, and I have dug up on the top, boven of the nether but I was on Creative Mode so I dug up the layer of bedrock and as I remember it was like the texture of the bedrock down except u could stand on it and there were mushrooms too! (sorry if this is way to long)
