If I were present at that scene, here's what I would have thought upon hearing "Ping" struggling to state "his" name: (1) "Ping" is almost certainly not his real name; and (2) he almost certainly has something to hide. As such, I would try to observe "Ping" while avoiding being noticed, and I believe I would almost certainly have been able to discover what "Ping" was hiding well before the mountain pass battle.
