I know how he feels, I'm type 1 diabetic and have also been in hospital from the "I don't care attitude", (being told u can't have much sugar can sometimes make u crave it more), it's most likely that being told what he can and can't eat might be making him frustrated and feeling left out when he sees people around him eating sugar when he can't have much of it himself, tell him that it's ok to have a bit of sugar now and again but having too much of it will mean it wont just be his sugar level/pancreas that will be effected, but if he keeps going on the way he is going, it's going to cause lots of different problems for all the organs in his body, like liver problems, hart-, hart problems, breathing problems, blindness, even death. Which I'm certain no one wants that for him. My diabetic clinic told me this sort of info and it scared me into caring for myself, if u can try and get him to talk to his doctor/diabetic clinic about it,do, because if he talks to them about it and how it makes him feel, they can sort out the problem and something WILL be resolved,(they might suggest something like having a small amount of insulin [injection] just before he has some sugar to keep his levels at bay, that's why I've been told to do, that way it can give him freedom to have his bit of sugar, but door having the injection, his sugar level won't rise to a dangerous level).
Hope he finally gets the message :)
