How do u respond when people tell u "It could be worse"?

Do u find it comforting when they tell u that "things could be worse" and that u should "suck it up"?

Whenever someone says that to me, I usually say 'Never say it could be worse. Cause it usually ends up way worse than it already is.'

I absolutely hate that.
If i'm venting to someone, and they say other people have it worse, it makes me feel like shit. It makes me feel guilty for reacting to bad situations and feeling basic emotions. The people in my family are very entitled to the pain (each thinking they've had the worst life ever) so I get this allot. Problems need to at least be acknowledged as something hurtful.

Yeah, sometimes people will say that to me when I'm not even whining/complaining and it doesn't help to hear that. It doesn't ease the pain any. It's as if everything I'm going through at the time doesn't matter to them. "Oh, u broke a bone? Someone u love died? Well, it could worse!".

At least someone is willing to admit that this annoyance is not normal. :)

I know right! Such a terrible thing to say to someone. u know what they always say? "It could be worse - u could live in Africa and be poor blahblahblah this and that". I'd honestly rather someone tell me they don't give a damn. That wouldn't sound as stupid.

I can't remember anyone ever saying that to me. But when I've heard that saying, I definitely agree with it. No need to act like a little teef when someone says 'it could be worse' because it's true, the situation could be worse, so no use babying the person. Gotta face reality.

So you're calling me and others a teef because we don't like that saying? Well then... lol. You're an insensitive prick.

You're right, this is a pointless discussion, but you're not going to change my mind. People don't care and you're a prime example of those who don't. Let it go. We're done here. Bye.

I'm a person who doesn't care huh? Lovely, however, you're very mistaken. I care immensely for my family, vrienden and worldwide issues, what I do not care for, is your bullshit. Had a blast talking with you.

When someone tells me that "it could always be worse" when I'm venting about real issues and problems that aren't just my fault (kids, husband, taxes, job stress, etc) I can't help but say, "Well it also could be a LOT better too!"
