'Reign' Season 3 Spoilers: 5 Things We Know So Far Before 2015 CW Premiere Date

The "Reign" season 2 finale was full of shocking moments and major twists. When the show returns to the CW for season 3 this fall, there will be a lot of new, exciting storylines and situations for the characters. Here are five interesting things that we know so far.

5. Queen Elizabeth will be a huge part of the new season.

We saw our first glimpse of Queen Elizabeth, Mary\'s greatest rival, in the finale, and we\'ll be seeing much more of her in season 3. Executive producer Laurie McCarthy told

Entertainment Weekly, "We\'ll see the court of England, we\'ll see the Elizabethan court and see the people who surround her. So, that\'s what I\'m excited about; that allows the show to have even more scope."

With Catherine kicked out of the castle by her own son, she\'ll now be forced to team up with Elizabeth, Mary\'s rival. At the end of season 2, she appeared before Elizabeth to announce her main goal — to take down Mary. It\'ll be interesting to see what schemes Catherine has up her sleeve.

The series is set to shed some of its dark elements for a lighter, more fun feel.

"I miss the fun," McCarthy told Seat42F. "I miss the gaming and scheming at Court without such heavy consequences. I think we\'ll get back to that next season. It\'s not going to be as dark."

With Conde out of the picture, Mary and Francis rekindled their romance. It appears that Mary was finally able to move past the horrible memories of her past and find it in her heart to forgive Francis. 

"Mary\'s feelings for Conde became less kind of love and more loyalty," McCarthy said. "I think she feels like she turned to him at a moment when she needed somebody. She did it as a way to not feel the feelings that she was having for Francis, which were so mixed with regret and remorse and pain of the experiences that she endured this year. So, I think that they\'ve been drifting closer to each other for some time now, and you\'ll see them come together in a way that\'s very dramatic and heartbreaking."

At the end of season 2, viewers received a huge shock when it was revealed that Francis never actually recovered from his illness, and that he is, in fact, dying.

"Young men, even young kings, do not live forever," McCarthy told EW. "The real Francis died young, and while we take historical liberties, we adhere to the major signposts of Mary Queen of Scots\' life. Moreover, the foreshadowing of Francis\' eventual but untimely death has been woven into our story from the outset."
