Sam Winchester Article: It's Rough Being a Samgirl!

Fansites are funny places! When I joined this site in February, I found so many exciting things to do, to commentaar on, to look at, and great people who shared my undying love of Supernatural! But I also found something that I was not expecting - a fanbase tipped so heavily in favour of Dean. Now, I love Dean. He's hot, funny, all that stuff, but he was starting to irritate me a little with his seemingly indifferent attitude towards the breaking of the seals - certainly not his fault, but the story arc was starting to drag. I found myself really wishing he would make up his mind already, sink of swim, poo of get off the pot...you know what I mean! I don't envy the guy door any means, but it's been pointed out ad nauseum how horrible his experience was. We know that! But the end of the world is at stake, so, maybe a little urgency is called for?

Anyway - I am not here to Dean-bash, simply because I am not a Dean-basher. I am PRO-Sam, but I am not ANTI-Dean. Like I said, I love Dean, I just love Sam more. Sam is not a saint. (But apparently Dean is! oops, heh,heh, that wasn't bashing was it...?) He's a person with flaws. But one of those flaws is not stupidity. He knows what they are facing, and what they are up against. So he made a decision to use what he has, and to fight back. Whether of not it was the right decision remains to be seen, but that's the point - it remains to be seen!

I get my back up a bit when I read things like, he's addicted, he's too far gone, he's a stupid idiot, how could he hurt Dean so badly, how could he let skankus supremus Ruby use him like this, only Dean can save him - WTH??? If the whole point of this toon is to have Sam sink to rock-bottom just so Dean can be the hero and save him, then I'll be sorry I started watching. I hereby challenge the whole idea that Dean will be the ultimate saviour and Sam the ultimate scumbag! (Unless Kripke wants to be a real dick about it and base his decision on who has the larger fanbase! We'd be right out of luck, fellow Sammites!)

So the point is, Sam is taking a horrible bashing that I feel is unjustified and unfair, because I unshakably believe there is meer to him than that. But try to defend him? Holy crap! Put on your flak jackets and combat helmets, keep your head low and listen for incoming - you're dead in their sights and they've got heat-seeking missiles at their disposal. (I do love debating, especially with fanfly, but I don't want to have to defend my POV every time!) ;))

The one possibility that bothers me though, is if people are so pro-Dean that they become anti-Sam. of if they are so pro-Dean that they can't see any flaws in his behaviour. Are they so pro-Dean that they can't look at things impartially. Exactly the same thing applies to people who are pro-Sam. (Like me of course! It's something I try to stay aware of.)

All I know is, I love them both, but I love Sam more, and I'd like to be able to count on Kripke not to make Sam into a total ass. I have to wonder if he had any idea that one of his lead characters would become so disliked, if not downright hated. Granted, there are some (not many!) people who really don't like Dean. All this is because of the turns the storyline has taken, and it's really too bad because they used to be so close. It's harder for Sam fans, though, 'cause it's OUR guy who's getting trashed! WE WANT JUSTICE!!

*Edit* Something I wanted to add, but forgot. This ramble was inspired door an icoon I found of Sam with large red devil horns on his head. It's sort of funny, I guess - but only if you're a Dean fan. When I first saw it I was hugely disappointed that Sam would be depicted that way. I don't think it likely that I would find an icoon of Dean carving up somebody on a rack! I actually used the Sam icoon in a pick I made, though meer out of spite than anything else. ;) :)

ruby-star THANK YOU!! Finding another Samgirl is hard! Totally agree with your article, I mean, I do love Dean of course I do but his popularity is taking over and it makes me sick to think he might be the one who saves everything. It should be sam and dean. *dodges deangirls missiles* and its turning into the dean show. I hate feeling this way as Supernatural is the best show but Sam has been neglected and his character left unexplored in season 4, he's just turned into monster of the week drinking rubys blood. And yet I feel I understand him more than dean. *sigh* But I know I'm not alone now and I really enjoyed reading your article!

67impala Thank you!! And I know exactly what you mean! You said a lot of things better than I did. It IS turning into the Dean show, and that's not just sour grapes talking. It is never surprising, and is actually downright amusing how Dean can do no wrong and say no wrong in so many fans' views. It's almost pointless to defend Sam when Dean is elevated to the level of near-sainthood. Honestly, I never felt that way before coming to this site, but it's so frustrating - it would be so nice to make a comment about Sam and for just once have 14 people agree with it...heck, I'd settle for 3! I'm almost at the point where I wish Dean would do something totally nasty, but it wouldn't matter. He'd be defended tooth and nail no matter what. So...we'll just continue to enjoy Sam with all his faults. It does make him a more well-rounded character - because we all know that Dean doesn't have any! ;))) :DD

liissaaxx I agree with you! When I watched the very first episode of supernatural I immediately thought Jensen was better looking, but I never was against Sam. I loved them both. As supernaturals ratings began to rise and so many teenage girls started screaming each time Deans name was said. I began to notice that, in many ways, Sam was better than Dean. And then season four came, Sammy has demon powers and Dean has come back from hell. I do agree that its kind of turning into Dean's show, but maybe all this stuff about Sam is going to end up turning the story back to him and making him good! For all us Pro-Sam, lets just hope for the best and continue watching our beloved Sam fall into the Shadows of Dean. xxx

67impala Ha,ha! I love your last line! Sam has been presented in such a bad light right from "Lazarus Rising". Hopefully Season 5 will focus more on him, and even more hopefully, show some positive things about him. I wonder, though, if the 'damage' has already been done, and if he ever will be seen in a favourable way. He'd probably have to sacrifice himself to save Dean to have that happen! (Couldn't you just see that happening?) :(( Thanx for the support; it does me good to know there are other Samgirls out there as well! :))

Natalie88 We're not saints either, we all have our flaws.. Maybe we don't drink demon blood and can't exorcise them (I wish I could.. LOL) But SAMMY IS MY HERO!!!you're right 67impala, I'm not anti-Dean at all, I really like him, but Sam is by far better!! All in one :)) I'm glad to know there's an army of Samgirls ready to protect him :) P.S awesome article :)

67impala Thank you!! Yeah, I just had to get that off my chest - I was pretty annoyed at the time! One thing (of many!) that I love about Sam is that he's not an open book - he's a little harder to read, he seems to take in a lot and not say much - but when he does have something to say, it's well worth listening to. He comes out with some real surprises, because his motivations aren't always crystal clear. I find Dean is much more predictable, and therefore a little less interesting, than Sam. Sam's army rules!! :))

samlover316 Gosh, 67impala, I wasn't sure that you could get any more awesome, but then I found this. Thank you!!!! These are all of the things I've been thinking since everyone started thinking Sam was the freak with the psychic abilities. I've loved Sam since day 1, and finally people agree! And Dean is the bomb, he's amazing, but Sam just has that 3-dimensional quality that Dean doesn't have, and I'm REALLY getting sick of hearing Dean whine about Hell. I mean, that must have been traumatizing and horrifying and the worst experience of anyone in existence, but SHUT UP ALREADY!!! He kept bringing that up as a guilt trip to Sam, and I'm just sick and tired of it. Sorry to sound bitter, but I'm merely venting. And I'm so glad things turned out okay between them!!!

67impala Omigosh, thank you!! **blushes like crazy!** You're exactly right when you say that Sam is 3-dimensional; he's a "real" person. He thinks, he feels, he hurts, and he deals with his emotions like a normal person - well as normal as a person can be, given what they do! Believe it or not, I was just thinking earlier about Dean's horrible experience in Hell, but can you imagine what it must have been like for Sam?? Watching Dean being ripped apart by the hellhounds, then removing his body from the house, driving hundreds of miles to a field in the middle of nowhere and having to bury him?? And all the time knowing that Dean suffered this fate because of him? IMO, that was equally horrible, because Sam had to live this in real life. Dean was in a place where the kind of brutality he endured was normal, and no one was human any more. That doesn't take away from what he suffered, but it was different. And you don't sound bitter. Personally, I don't get what the total Dean love-in is all about, but I'm sure glad we have Sam. I'm also really happy that things turned out okay between them! I hope they continue to build on that in Season 5 - I miss the old Sam and Dean!! :DD

shomill I love 'em both. Yeah, you're totally right. Dean has a lot of flaws, and I'm tired of people saying he's perfect. He's not! And, although I haven't seen the later episodes yet, I've heard about 'em and seen screencaps, and I don't think I'll ever be able to hate Sammy. (Might wanna slap him upside the head real good, but that doesn't mean I'll hate him! lol) Thx for giving your opinion. Yeah, it's hard being a Samgirl!

befferz I agree, I love Sam more than dean. And all those Sam haters make it hard for us. It's unfair. Yes he has his faults, but doesn't everyone. He has a lot more than that, and Sam-haters don't see that.

patriciagissel1 Completely agree whit you!!! Dean had a difficult life as Sam did, but the fact that Dean loose his childhood it was their parents fault, not Sam's, and Dean take care of Sam because he love him yes, but above all because Jhon make him do it, and Dean made all that Jhon tell him to do without ever say no. Dean weren't that "perfect brother" that some deangirls say, he take care of him yes but also controlled his life like was his, and was cruel more of one time biting him and calling him monster, a monster because of their mother's fault. Sam has his mistakes, but never was cruel and bossy with Dean. And this isn't a bashing against Dean, is the reality of how Dean treated Sam when he was angry and how Dean handle the life of the two of them just he is the "big brother". To love someone is another thing, is respect the other person, his individuality, his way of think and see the world, ever if one isn't agree with that. In this sense I like the Dean of this season better, because is more respectful, more matture....I expect he remains the same.

tellymaster This was an awesome article. I agree completely! I love Dean. I love Dean very very much, but I love Sam more. All of my friends that watch Supernatural all like Dean more, and I'm the only one who prefers Sam. Very good though!

67impala Thanks jared-lover-27, shomill, befferz, patriciagisel1, and tellymaster! I think I've mellowed a bit towards Dean and agree with patriciagisel1 that the Dean of this season is more respectful and not as irksome as in seasons past - but I still love Sam much more, and always will. :)
