Would the world be fun if everyone was the same? No, not really. This also accounts for the Sonic world. One part of my opinion on recolours in a nutshell.
Shadow isn't a Sonic recolour. His quill design is way different. :/ Not to mention, they have a different body shape, shoe design, etc... If you made Shadow blue he wouldn't be Sonic. Mephiles, on the other hand, is a Shadow recolour.
About Mephiles... he pretty much took Shadow's shadow as a 'reference' for a physical form, since Mephiles doesn't actually have one. Well yes he is that glowing purple liquid but that would just look weird. But I agree with MephilesTheDark, Shadow isn't exactly a clone of Sonic. Similiar, yes, but not an exact clone. The only reason I'm not fond on Shadow much is because of his fangirls. They drive me up the wall most Shadow fangirls.
So yeah, nothing to do with recolours. Just explaining Mephiles. I personally don't like recolours, because they often just look like a canon character with a different colour scheme. And they can also be over-powered, Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus, canon rip-offs or just simply downright bland and not interesting.
@Mephiles97: Recolors are art theft in a way. People scribble over other people's artwork like they're an art template & act as if they drew it themselves when it's obvious that they didn't. They are usually poorly done. It's only good if you:
1. Give credit to the original owner.
2. Ask the original artist permission to make it their own.
or even better,
3. Both!
@SaraTheDog: Mary-Sues are overpowered/godmodding female fanfictional characters. They tend to be very annoying, undefeatable, or easy eye candy to men or even women. Some of their common abilities is to make many guys fall over them, have tons of powers & not be defeatable, or have their twoo wuv cum 2 save da day!!!!1111one They can also be a recolor, which pisses me off more than usual.
@SaraTheDog: Don't worry! It's always nice to know. Because I RPed with people with Mary-Sue fan characters before and beleive me. It gets boring very quickly because they can do anything and everything. And more info for you! Male Mary-Sues are called Gary-Stus! And Marty-Sam is another word you can use, but I commonly use them on the emo version of Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus.

Raven- A girl that is full blown goth. An extremely depressing character. Usually has a terrible life, sometimes an orphan. This character is usually hated by everyone in Fanficts and/or loved by no-one. Nothing can be more depressing then meeting this OC. There is no boy term for this OC.
