The DC Extended Universe is going to be taking a massive leap forward in just a few months with the arrival of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but next August will test just how interested the masses are in the budding franchise when the villainous ensemble piece Suicide Squad hits theaters.

DC and Warner Bros. deserve a lot of credit for taking such a gamble so early in the DCEU’s existence, as a film stuffed with DC antagonists and antiheroes doesn’t instantly scream mainstream appeal in the same way that capitalizing on their big-name heroes does. So far, it’s been a somewhat divisive beast, one armed with a boatload of talent in front of and behind the camera, but whose creative choices have run the entire gamut of fan reactions.

It’s a big risk project that could easily fall apart if not handled right, but one that no one should actively be rooting to fail, as its creative and financial success could earn a lot of goodwill for the DCEU and open the door for even more unique projects like it between all those headlined by the various members of the Justice League.

As with any film – in this case a comic book film, which will always draw the positive and negative attention of passionate fans – many concerns about the ultimate project are still valid until it can be assessed in full, and there are still many months ahead to learn more about it, especially in regards to which characters actors like Common and Scott Eastwood are playing.

Taking what has been given to us up until now, though, let’s take a mildly spoiler-filled look at the confirmed characters we know are in the film to stack up who’s worth getting the most excited about to see…
