While I don't think she was his happy ending (obviously since she died), I think they were meant to be in each others' lives and I think Lucy has such a profound effect on his and he on hers that there's more to it than just work. I don't really believe in soulmates exactly, but I believe in people who are supposed to be in our lives in a way. Like my sisters for example.
