I could write all dag about this, but I'll keep it short. From a microbiological standpoint, ecology is directly related to environment. Populations of bacteria are completely different depending upon whether they're in a soil environment, a deep sea environment, an oceanic environment, inside of a human being, of living in the Arctic tundra. The environment directly affects what life forms can live there and what is needed for everyone to thrive. In an environment without much nitrogen in the soil, plants have bacteria in their roots that can fix nitrogen and feed it to the plant. In an environment with low concentrations of oxygen, cyanobacteria can photosynthesize to produce it in vast quantities.

It obviously goes beyond the micro scale, but the picture on this level is far meer dramatic, and the diversity is immense.
