14 Things Belle Could Have Done Instead of Going to the West Wing

, the second-biggest mistake Belle makes is sneaking into the mysterious West Wing (the first is standing the hot-tempered Beast up for dinner). We don’t blame her really, because if we found ourselves inside a gigantic castle, the first place we would want to explore is the secretive area that everyone talks about in hushed tones. Obviously, there must be something worth seeing in the forbidden wing if it’s off-limits, after all. However, the castle is

, which means that there are probably many other things Belle could have done to occupy her time before resorting to creep into the West Wing. Here is a short list of options:

This activity isn’t actually taking advantage of the enchanted nature of the castle, but if you had some extra energy to expend, this might be a good use of your time. Also, stairmasters didn’t exist yet, so people probably had to climb actual stairs for fitness—just look at all of them! It’s a Fitbit owner’s dream.

2. Discovered the names of all the creepy gargoyles lining the castle corridors.

There have to be some interesting stories behind those gargoyles and Belle could have heard them all rather than going into the West Wing and sending the Beast into a fiery rage.

3. Asked Chip to show off more super cute tricks.

Chip can spray water between his snaggled-teeth, blow bubbles in his tea, and generally be extraordinarily adorable. What other tricks might this wee teacup have in store? Maybe a few that Belle could have witnessed if she had chosen cuteness over curiosity.

Belle could have been a much-needed peacemaker between these two bickering buddies. However, petty arguments are a crucial part of their friendship, so maybe it wouldn’t be so necessary after all.

Being as well-read as she was, Belle had surely read a book or two on art history. She could probably spend some time looking at the artwork in the castle, before giving in to her desire to tiptoe into that secretive western section we previously mentioned.

Let’s be honest: Even though being trapped in a castle isn’t ideal, it certainly is better than being stuck in a tiny town where everyone worships Gaston.

The wardrobe knows everybody’s business. She knows everything about everyone. That’s why her drawers are so big; they’re full of secrets!

8. Started a gossip column about Lumiere and Fifi.

Lumiere and Fifi’s relationship is probably public knowledge to most of the castle’s inhabitants, despite their attempts to be secretive. However, this could have been Belle’s chance to author one of the world’s very first tabloids—a most noble pursuit.

9. Determined how many brothers and sisters Chip really had.

There are a lot of little teacups in that cabinet, and they are all Chip’s brothers and sisters. How many of them are there? Is Mrs. Potts mom to all of them? What are their ages? (We have a lot of questions).

The stove seems very passionate about cooking and very bummed that there aren’t many people around to appreciate it. Indulge him, Belle. Find out just how he gets that cheese soufflé so fluffy.

In “Be Our Guest,” Belle is handed a giant menu. We find it hard to believe she tried everything on that menu in one meal alone. Why not kick back, relax, and nap next to the fire in-between bites of everything at your disposal? Sounds better to us than walking through a cold, drafty forbidden hall.

Lumiere is a master juggler and there’s no doubt in our minds that he’d teach Belle his technique.

13. Explained to the suits of armor that it’s not polite to stare.
