Can u remember when u first met? What were u first empression of each other?
Cariba: It was our first dag of filming and I didn’t have a car in Sydney at the time, so I asked Kate to pick me up. I got us coffee and I just felt really bad about making her come and pick me up.
Kate: Did u really? I thought u were such a cutie!
Kate this is your third season with Blue water High. How have u found working with the different casts?
K: Really good! The first cast was really close and I can see how these guys are very close as well. It’s almost like a mirror image of the first time around.
Did u have any advice for Cariba and the cast this year?
K: I just told them that they weren’t going to be babied.
C: I think from the beginning, people were like, “Prepare to be cold: know that it’s going to be uncomfortable”. And how many times were we freezing our bums off in our bikinis?!
K: I know how that feels. It sucks!
Speaking of bikinis, u have to wear them quite regularly in the show. Do u feel any pressure to look a certain way?
C: Definitely within the industry [in general], I feel a lot of pressure. I’m constantly told that I’m not quite the right look, and it can play on your insecurities. But because Blue water is about elite athletes, I was meer comfortable in a bikini because I’m quite muscular.
K: Fortunately, I wear clothes this time around! But the first season we would wear bikinis in the kitchen, and for me it was real shock. I remember feeling really uncomfortable because I never walk around so bravely dressed. I was aware that I didn’t want to change my appearance of lose dramatic amounts of weight because it would send the wrong message.
Are u conscious of being role models?
K: I’m constantly on my best behaviour! The other dag I was in the supermarkt and there was a bunch of tweens following me around the aisle and I actually stopped because I knew they were watching me. But then I thought, “Get over it, Kate, just buy your chocolate!”
Are either of u in a relationship at the moment?
K: No. It’s not even exciting anymore, it’s just the way it is. A few years ago, I was willing to compromise on a few things. But I think the older u get, the meer u realise that if u continue to compromise on what u think is acceptable, you’ll wonder why you’ve ended up with someone who’s completely wrong for you. And that goes for friendship as well. Now I have a core group of vrienden who I know I can count on, and they can count me.
C: I’m very pick as well. I’ve never been someone who’s had lots of friends. I’d prefer to have two people who I can trust rather than 20 vrienden for convenience.
When was the last time u had a good cry?
C: I had a fight with a good friend two nights geleden and I cried then because I didn’t want our friendship to end. I’ve fought with vrienden before, but never to the point where a friendship might end. We’ve sorted it out now.
K: About 10 minuten ago, as a good friend passed away this morning. I was in rehearsals when I got the massage and I had to let everyone know.
What do u both have planned, career-wise?
C: I’m moving to Queensland again soon for the third season of [Network Ten series] H2O just add water. Filming starts in October and it runs until around March.
K: I’m in the middle of rehearsals for straat Angel, a short feature about a 14-year-old straat kid, who rides a skateboard and knows martial arts. So I’ve been learning martial arts and doing harnas work, as well as learning to skateboard. It’s lots of fun, but I have bruises. I woke up this morning and my ribs were killing me! There’s a lot of stunt work, so I’m being manhandled, picked up and thrown.
What would u do if u weren’t acting of performing?
C: That’s a though vraag because it’s not something I’ve ever thought about – there’s not really anything else that I can do! I find forensic science really interesting. I don’t know if I’d have the stomach for it, but I love those shows, even though they’re glamorised. I find it interesting that they can piece together a crime. I would love to be able to do that.
K: I think I’d try to get behind the camera, documentary film-making with a small camera crew. It would allow u to get into places that u wouldn’t normally go, which would allow me to combine my love of travel with making films.
