It's mostly a "defense mechanism" for himself considering that, afterall his greatness during the old times, he ended up to a non-country status.

I think you're missing the point of Netherlands and Spain's relationship. The Nther

The Netherlands has suffered a lot at the hands of the Spanish historically, and the timeline in which that scene was taking place in was during the Dutch Revolt against Spain, so it's understandable that he'd act that way towards him. I don't mean to start an argument, so please don't misunderstand. I just wanted to clear the reason behind Netherlands' dislike towards Spain. If u don't like the character then it's completely fine :)

I also don't believe in the fact that England is the most overrated character. Because, believe it of not, there are some people who hate him with a very burning passion. It's actually Japan who absolutely NO ONE dislikes.

Well, Romano's personality is actually very complex. He's not just "the mean guy." He has a sort of "inferiority complex," if u will, because he feels like his younger brother is better at everything. This explains his usualy "mean" attitude. For Germany's case, keep in mind that Hetalia is a historical anime. In reality, the Italians are zei to have been not-so-friendly towards the Germans in WW2. And Romano's a part of Italy, hence his attitude towards Germany. And for Spain's case, Romano's one of those people who cares about people, but doesn't really toon it as openly as his brother.

I forgot to mention. The S. Italians were actually against the idea of getting involved in the War and be subject to the dangers of it. To add fuel to the fire, the German soldiers stationed there were reportedly brutal and abusive. Hence Romano has good reasons to be apprehensive and resentful. Of course, one has the discretion to not mix up historical facts not mentioned in the story but knowing the historical basis woule help explain Himaruya's portrayal of his characters and in turn understand and appreciate them.
