I think it's because of his brother, he wants to be better then him and prove that he is a good trainer. His mind tells him to be strong and doesn't understand to toon love for something. Then Ash showed up and he saw how he treats his Pokemon, u can tell he's confused door his and hates it. He doesn't understand that tonen love for your Pokemon it the best thing to do. But at the end, he starts to change.
