Pretty Little Liars S5.04 Review – ‘Thrown from the Ride’
, I think we’ve all got to feel like we’ve been thrown out of a speeding car down the highway. Or maybe out a plane without a parachute. Ali’s no longer playing victim, she is on. Emily’s rethinking her Alison obsession. Lucas wants to forgive and forget. Most importantly, technology went backwards! From the mini cassette recorder to using IM during class, it’s 1999 again. What the hell is going on in Rosewood?
It’s hard going from Queen B to prisoner of your own bedroom. While the Liars run around Rosewood, ignoring her texts, Ali has to stare down a father who wants to move her to a different city and clothing that’s 2 years out of date. While I can’t muster much sympathy for her Goodwill box, Ali’s tears after begging her dad not to make her see the doctor per Rosewood PD’s orders is almost heartbreaking. Everyone feels lost, confused and alone at some point in their lives and it looks like that moment is now for Ali.
When Hanna finally answers her calls, she ropes her into attending the medical exam and then refuses to tell Hanna (and the doctor) the truth about a pretty ugly scar on her leg. Hanna persists, wanting to hear the truth, but Ali reminds her that once you know the truth, you can’t unknow it. Leave it to Alison to decide to protect the Liars from the truth.
If all mushiness that was making you think that underneath it all, Ali was just a girl with real feelings the reigning Queen of Mean hangs onto her crown when she pulls out a recording of her conversation with the doctor for Hanna to distribute to the Liars to memorize. At least she’s getting better at realizing they need to keep their stories straight, I guess?
The rest of the Liars may not be taking Ali’s calls, but Hanna’s identity crisis has only changed her hair, not her personality. Forever the good friend, she tags along with Ali and takes the heat when her friends (mainly Spencer) aren’t interested in telling more lies for their former leader.
With Mona stalking around corners and convincing Lucas to ask more questions about Ali, Hanna has no idea which way to go, so she settles going backwards. Oh Hanna, if you’re going to go back to shoplifting, steal something worthwhile! Vintage 90s is all the rage, but you’re going to regret that crushed velvet bustier, trust me!
Spencer’s still on the quest for the truth about what happened to Mrs. DiLaurentis, while her poor mother is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and trying to bury her head in the sand. When Spencer tries to get her mom to help her uncover the secrets Mr. Hastings and Melissa are hiding, Mrs. Hastings is forced to admit that Mrs. DiLaurentis came to the Hastings to try to blame Spencer to Alison’s death and now that Alison is alive, she worries that Mr. Hastings silenced his former mistress to protect his daughter.
Spencer’s off her game because she doesn’t ask if Mrs. DiLaurentis said it was her or just their daughter. I blame Toby being out of town. It was nice to see Andrew, but you know he’s going to end up on Team ‘A’ or Mona or whomever decides to target the Liars next any day now. Spencer’s stringing him along just like Ali would, making him do the heavy lifting while Toby gets all the kisses.
Still, it’s good to have a guy around who will help you landscape your yard after your next door neighbor was found buried in it and not to       mention the half gallon of rat poison in the garage. Or maybe Andrew, like Hanna, knows that no Hastings would kill someone and leave evidence (be it a body or poison for vermin) behind.
Reminders of Shauna are everywhere for Aria and when she gets a chance to stream the dead girl’s funeral, Aria is almost driven right into Ezra’s arms. Like any good boyfriend, he tries to take her mind off it with checkers and reminding her to forgive herself.
I miss EzrA. Without ‘A’, he’s back to boring and infecting Aria, who only managed to be not boring when she reminded us that Emily has killed to protect her loved ones before too. Remember Mya’s cousin, Nate? I didn’t, but I wish Aria had talked to Em more and Ezra less.
Paige and Emily aren’t over yet, despite the last 100 episodes telling us otherwise. Paige tags along on Emily’s outings with the still suspicious swimfan, but quickly cools things off when she spies Mona watching them. After Mona reminds her that Emily’s Team Alison and Paige is Team Annihilate Alison, Paige tries to tell Emily that it would be better for everyone if Ali didn’t come back to school. When Emily presses, Paige admits that the people Ali hurt are setting things in motion so she can’t hurt them again.
Torn between Paige and Ali, Emily picks Ali. A little bit anyway. When Em tells her that not everyone will be happy she’s back, and that maybe she should start over somewhere else, Ali reminds her that they’ll be fine as long as they stick together.
I’m not a fan of Paige, but how Emily can’t choose her over Ali, I don’t know. Paige hands her truth while Alison hands her lies. Paige wants to empower her while Ali wants to keep Em playing her way.
Rosewood’s Queen B types are running scared; Ali’s crying in her bed and Mona’s rallying the forces. Who will win? Next week
celebrates the big 100 and we find out! In the meantime, head over to the forum and let us know what you think about where the Liars are now.
