They are non-crystallized silica, which is a mineral found near the earth’s surface in areas where ancient hot springs once existed. When the hot springs dried up, layers of the silica, combined with water, were deposited into cracks and cavities of the bedrocks, forming opal. Information and Facts The name Opal comes from a Latin word “opalus” which means precious jewel. The opal was also once called “Cupid Paederos” door the Romans which means a child as beautiful as love.
