Critics Consensus: Creed brings the Rocky franchise off the mat for a surprisingly effective seventh round that extends the boxer\'s saga in interesting new directions while staying true to its classic predecessors\' roots.

Adonis Johnson never knew his famous father, world heavy weight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there\'s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed\'s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo - the fierce rival who became his closest friend.more

Anyone hoping the franchise might open out into new thematic territory will be disappointed; this is the same old ritual, from the amped-up training sequences to the climactic title fight with its absurd number of punches landed in every round.
Stallone enjoys inspired chemistry with co-star Michael B. Jordan... and Ryan Coogler directs the hell out of the movie.
One of the best films of the Rocky series, worthy of the championship belt.
Coogler infuses his film with a genuine passion and unironic attachment to the original's best qualities, particularly its delicate balancing act between anguish and triumph
Irksomely epic in its dreariness and cheesiness, this is nevertheless a film that will appeal to the converted.
The smartest thing Sylvester Stallone did was to not write and/or direct this film. Ryan Coogler brings a fresh set of eyes to the project. Creed works both as part of a larger franchise and on its own massively entertaining terms.
The surest sign that Coogler has honored his source material is that Creed is populist through and through. His achievement... is that he gives his audience exactly what they want and makes it feel like a gift rather than a bribe.
I'm not afraid to say that Stallone could earn some award consideration for his work here.
Everyone is deserving of credit, but the holy trinity at play here is Coogler, Jordan, and Stallone.
With a loving look to the past and a confident glance towards the future, Creed is a triumphant entry in the Rocky franchise. This is Rocky V done right.
Creed manages to rise above its well-worn premise and deliver a film that is at once stylish, engaging and ultimately moving.
The spinoff of the acclaimed-Rocky series depends on the formula that made it a success, and it pays off tremendously. Creed's gritty direction, sensational performances from Jordan and Stallone and surprising depth packs a combination of punches that make the film both brilliant and entertaining. 4.5/5
Does it pass down the torch? Yes. Does it share similarities with the original "Rocky" film? Yes. Does this film stand on it's own? Absolutely! "Creed" follows the son of the late Apollo Creed as he hunts down Rocky Balboa to train him. In hopes to continue his fathers legacy while still maintaining his own name, young Adonis Creed will do whatever it takes to get into the ring. As he meets a young girl along the way, you completely buy into their connection and you never once think that it feels forced. This film is essentially about fighting for your name, but at its core it really is a release from the "Rocky" films and an introduction into the new generation. Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan share amazing chemistry, bringing me to tears on multiple occasions. "Creed" is easily one of the best entries in the franchise, even comparable to the original. With a great script, incredible performances, a story worthy of the title, and direction that puts you in the front row, "Creed" is fantastic! If I had one complaint, it would be that it might just share a few too similarities to the first film. By the end of the film I felt I was just accepting the conclusion. In the end, I loved this film from start to finish and I recommend seeing it in the theatres for the full experience. Terrific!
Creed is a perfectly enjoyable flick. It should really score with audiences unfamiliar with the 1976 film. Rocky was a landmark. I mean c'mon it was nominated for TEN Academy Awards and won 3 including Best Picture. Subsequent entries were less critically exalted but no less crowd-pleasing. What made Rocky III and Rocky IV so entertaining was the charismatic opponents that cast a legendary shadow. Remember when Clubber Lang told Adrian to come to his apartment to "come see a real man" or when Ivan Drago uttered "I must break you" in his thick Russian accent. Those villains were iconic in their mythic evil. Tony Bellew is the nasty opponent in this entry, a Liverpudlian bruiser. While the individual, who is a cruiserweight prizefighter in real life, has an authenticity, he's not enough of that larger than life personality that can carry a production. Nonetheless, the picture utilizes enough mythology to curry our favor. The effort is impossible to hate. There's the "Rocky Steps" outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Apollo's red, white & blue trunks, Bill Conti's soaring theme during the climax and most importantly, Sylvester Stallone. The 69 year old actor settles into the mentor role like a comfortable pair of shoes. He's a wise, old soul and his presence in this film feels like a comforting hug. Stallone's performance is worth the price of admission.
A worthy addition to the Rocky series, Creed is a powerful character drama that explores the issue of legacy. The film follows the illegitimate son of former heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed, Adonis Johnson, as he attempts to follow in his father's footsteps and seeks out retired champ Rocky Balboa to train him. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and Tessa Thompson, the cast is pretty good and delivers some impressive performances. Additionally, the writing does a good job at honoring the Rocky series while also passing the torch. And as always, the fight sequences are incredibly exciting. Creed is a smart and well-crafted film that has an interesting story to tell.
Time takes everybody out; time's undefeated.
No I don't know nobody's been to my house in a long time you might be uncomfortable there.
