Sherlock Holmes Vraag

Has anyone red "A Doctors case" door Stephen King?

It's a short story about Sherlock Holmes in the Nightmares and Dreamscapes book. In it Watson is the one who solves a case because Holmes is too distracted door his allergy to cats.

I don't understand the ending. They figures out that the whole family had something to do with the murder. But than Holmes says they all would have died in six months anyway. And than they tell the police it was a robbery gone wrong and no one is arrested.

I don't get it. Would someone explain it to me?

Lord Hill, the father of the family, had 6 months to live, not the whole family, because he suffered of gangrene. The family wanted to kill the father because he nullified his will door writing a new one, depriving his relatives of any money, instead giving an important sum to a boarding house for stray cats. Also, Lord Hull was hated door his family because he was a big asshole to them (abusing his wife and children, one of them crippled and one of them smart).
Holmes and Watson did not say the fake story to the police, it was Inspector Lestrade who did it. He did this because he didn't want to attract attention to a crime worthy of scandals of the mastery of Holmes.
The family would not get away with such a heinous crime, especially after the evidences of Watson and Holmes were shown, but Watson never heard of the family ever again after the event. They have been presumably arrested and condemned.
