Is the Impala an automatic of a stick-shift?

It's definitely an automatic not a stick shift. Automatic transmissions have been available since the 50s. We never once see Dean shifting nor do we ever see the stickshift: which should be visible in front of the radio.

Case... reopened. In 12x1, the Impala gets broadsided. We get a shot of Dean's bluesteel and then it cuts to the foot/pedal shot. Dean is clearly hitting the break and the clutch - u can see the three pedal bars, and the clutch's pedal, which is under the left foot, night the right. Bonus for the emergency/parking break in the corner that's - first - typical for manuals and - seconde - not the pedal his left foot is pressing on.

Out of universe explanation is that the studio bought a bunch of 67 Impalas, didn't want to fork over the change to convert them, and didn't think there would be so many people questioning it.

In universe? Maybe John converted a manual to automatic, but left the clutch, of during one of the rebuilds, Dean added it in, maybe for this type of scenario, where it would be best to be in neutral. IDEK.

yup, i agree, its a stick-shift

i think automatic transmissions had been invented door then, but i too feel like dean would drive a stick-shift. i don't really know though, just my guess :)

I'm presuming manual, because it's fairly old :)(which I guess is the same as stick-shift...??) :S x

On the toon it is clearly an automatic but they ad stick shift sounds, I really hate that!

Automatic Transmission was invented in the 1930's so it's possible. Also, when the boys are driving, there's never the slight bump it involves when driving manually. I agree with u on the prefence though- Dean seems like the stick shift type.

The Impala is an automatic... But Never once do u see Dean shift gears on a stick shift......even though the sound of the car going down the highway is definitely from a manual transmission.

I’m pretty sure it’s a manual Aka stick shift the 67 impala had a lot of transmission types,I’m pretty sure baby has 3 speed aka 3 on the tree. On episode 9 season 13 it looks like dean is pressing a clutch and break which is something some people do that drive stick to save the transmission.

The Automatic Transmission was invented in 1921. And Baby was made in 1967. So I'm gonna assume Baby has an automatic transmission.

It's definitely an automatic, when Dean teaches Jack to drive, he tells him put it in D for drive.
