Chapter Nineteen
Ash:

I didn’t sleep well after Anna left, needless to say. After I returned, I tried to get to sleep as quickly as possible, so Corey wouldn’t see how shaken I was.

When I woke up, Corey and I were still huddled together. He was still sleeping, probably since Luke wasn’t here to keep him up all night, while they gossiped like old grannies.
Pushing Luke out of my mind, I eased my way out of Corey’s arms. They fell to the ground silently, but the rest of him stayed still, his breathing still slow and...

Chapter Thirteen
Ash:

I felt my body hit the mushy bottom. Funny, I didn’t remember sinking, but I knew I must be deep down. Whatever had pulled me down here was gone. It must have left me for some other creature to find.
My lungs didn’t burn for air anymore. Was I dying? It seemed to peaceful for it to be death. I saw something in front of me, a blurred image. Was this the creature sent to finish me off? Oh well. No hope left for me now.
I felt a grip around my waist, and my body being pulled upwards. No! I wanted to...

Chapter One
Ashelyn (Ash):

The first thought I had waking up in the morning was, today’s finally the dag I’ve been waiting for all my life.
Pushing away my thoughts, I rolled over on my bed, and wiped the sweat off my brow. Pushing aside the velvet curtain that covered the hole in the uithangbord that was my window, I squinted in the early morning light.
It was mid-September, and the heat was something awful. Even now, not even eight hours into the day, I could see the sun beating down on the ground. Dirt from the paths swirled in the air, making it...

Chapter Nine
Ash:

We argued for a long time after the Goddesses left. Luke insisted he was coming with us, and Corey zei it wouldn’t be a bad idea, but I held my ground. He was not coming with us to save Anna. Not only was it my rescue mission- well, mine and Corey’s- but I didn’t think I’d be able to put up with Luke’s crap long enough.
We decided to sleep on the edge of town that night, and decide in the morning.
“Ash…” Corey zei when we were awake, Luke had joined us, and I had made myself look as presentable...

Chapter Twenty
Ash:

After traveling over many meer bridges (I had changed into pants), and meeting no meer drakes (thank goodness), Corey and I decided to get some rest. We ate some of my preserved fruits, and chose an empty hut to sleep in. Sadly, I didn’t see Anna again.

When I woke up, Corey was still asleep. I left my knapsack in the hut, and slipped out, onto the island. This island was a bit larger than most, the hut a bit meer in tact. That was why we had chosen it to rest in.
I tucked my hair behind my ears, and wished...

Chapter Eighteen
Ash:

I’m not sure how long I was out of it, but for a long time, it seemed, after Luke died, I was drifting in and out of consciousness. When I was awake, I would cry, of sit huddled up in a ball. Often, Corey would make me eat of drink something. I thought about rejecting it, but that would go against the seconde promise I made to Luke. I probably would have gegeven up right then and there if it weren’t for Corey. He seemed to be able to read my mind. When I wanted to be alone and cry of wallow, he was a ghost. When I wanted a shoulder to cry on, or...

Chapter Seventeen
Ash:

“We need to go another way,” I insisted for the umpteenth time.
“There is no other way,” Luke argued back and, sadly, Corey agreed with him.
“You don’t understand!” Luke and Corey shared a look- the same look they’d been giving each other for a while- but, for once, I didn’t mind. Because this time, I was keeping something from them, too.
“How we gonna get down there?” Luke asked.
    “We’re not!” I insisted.
    “Yeah,...

Chapter Sixteen
Ash:

When I woke from a troubled sleep up, I was in Luke’s arms, and if I dreamed, I didn’t remember it. The first thing I laid my eyes on when they opened, was Corey.
“Corey!” I shot out of Luke’s arms, into his. “You’re alive!”
“Thanks for your confidence in me,” he laughed. Luke blinked hard, waking up. It was probably because of me. When he saw Corey, he, too jumped up.
    “Hey, man, you’re alive!”
“Again, thanks for your confidence in...

Chapter Fifteen
Ash:

I walked into the hut. The interior was simple enough- a bed pushed into the upper left hand corner, a nightstand volgende to it. A brand was burning in a fireplace on the right wall. A huge circular tafel, tabel with five chairs around it took up most of the space. Arianna was at what seemed to be the head of the table.
“Come. Sit volgende to me,” she said. Obeying, I took the zitplaats, stoel to her right.
“What is this room used for?”
“In the day, it is my bedroom. Yes, we are creatures of the night,...

Chapter Fourteen
Ash:

“Isn’t that something,” I muttered as the last of the regenboog prisms glittered away in the fading sunlight.
“That’s one way to look at it,” Luke said.
“Another way of looking at it is strange and abnormal,” Corey offered.
    “What now?”
“I need some rest,” Luke zei curtly, tossing his pack on the ground, and laying down volgende to it. No blanket of anything, just chilling out on the ground.
    Corey...

Chapter Twelve
Ash:

We made good mileage that day. Corey estimated we’d walked about fifteen miles in all. avondeten, diner was canned maïs and nuts, and we practiced with our magic a little before going to bed.

When I woke up, I wasn’t really awake. I was aware of what was happening around me, but hadn’t opened my eyes yet.
“We’re gonna make it there before nightfall, at the pace Ash is making us go,” Luke was saying.
“I know,” Corey replied. “We’re gonna have to go around it before night falls,...

Chapter Eleven
Ash:

I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing came out. The thing took a step back, so I could see what it was. It was a wolf. Huge, black, and gleaming red eyes.
Gulping, I whispered to the beast, “I’m sorry we killed the Bird of Night, but it attacked us first. It was self defense. We weren’t even in their part of the Element Forest.”
The wolf seemed to snort, and I frowned. It spoke to me, but it’s words were thoughts in my head.
We are not coming to avenge the bird. We have...

Chapter Ten
Ash:

Once the three of us reached the edge of the dark forest, we stopped to camp out. It was freezing that night, the first sign of our Indian summer ending, and we only had three light blankets total. None of us had anticipated such cold. Luke and Corey almost made me use their blankets, but I was not going to be the helpless little girl. We were all equals.
When I first woke up, I decided to not get up just yet. I was surprisingly comfy on the ground, still soft from summer. So I snuggled deeper down into my blankets.
    Blankets?...

Chapter Eight
Ash:

Almost hyperventilating, I ran back into the street, leaving the book, but the note burning a hole in my pocket. When I was in the center of the crowd, I took a deep breath, and calmed myself. For a spleet, split second, I thought about telling Corey, but a voice inside me screeched, No, don’t! I knew it was right. I couldn’t tell Corey about Andrew’s note. I know if Anna and I went after him, Corey would follow me. And I would go find him.
Putting on a placid face, I went to find Corey and Luke. They were still sitting where I had...
