According to The CW’s official promo for “Stay,’  viewers better brace themselves for a fresh deluge of tears and pain. Seeing as the theme for the night is “goodbye,” we’re definitely taking precautions (i.e. cuddling with our teddy bears and having chocolate and tissues on hand)! Not only is Jeremy Gilbert leaving Mystic Falls to attend art school and lead a normal life, but it also appears as though Sheriff Forbes’s health has disintegrated at an alarming rate. (#CancerTHEWORST.)

After opening with a precious montage that shows the Gilbert siblings, Jeremy and Elena, enjoying one last perfect day together before he skips town, the trailer flashes to an devastating hospital scene. In it, Liz lies dormant on a bed while a grief-stricken Caroline keeps vigil by her side, grasping her mom’s hand with all her might — as though the instant she let’s go she’ll lose her for good.

But don’t worry, fellow fang fans, there will be some feel-good vignettes scattered throughout this installment. For example? Jeremy joins his pals for a final round of drinks at the recently renovated Mystic Grill and Stefan and Caroline share a breathtaking kiss that will make you weak at the knees!

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to get through this,” Caroline confesses to Stefan. He casts a fervent look in her direction and gently runs his hand through her long, blonde hair. This is the closest he’ll ever come to the sun — to the brightest light he knows — without burning. “Life isn’t about your final moments — it’s about the moments that led up to them,” he assures her.
