Christmas Surprise - PG - Fluff/Romance - Modern AU

A/N: This fic was written for the ag-fics Christmas Fic Exchange. mara93 requested the following prompt: On Christmas Eve, Arthur secretly leaves a decorated Christmas boom for Gwen who is dealing with one hardship after another. She finds out who it came from somehow. Can be modern of medieval AU. Either's lovely. :)

When Arthur looks back on last Christmas, he secretly smiles. For that was the dag that his whole life changed, that he took a chance and managed to capture his true love's heart, the very woman who was currently wrapped in his warm embrace.

He just couldn't believe that he didn't act sooner. That he didn't make his intentions known to her earlier.

Arthur stands outside the house, unsure. Wondering whether his plan was a good idea. Thinking about Gwen's on and off relationship with Lancelot, her brother returning from Iraq (he was serving in the Air Forces). But most regrettably how her brother has just died, which was not that long after Lancelot (or Lance-A-Pounce as Arthur likes to call him) left her once again.

What makes it worse, other than her brother dying, is that Arthur knew that it was Guinevere's favourite time of the year. She took a lot of pleasure in finding the perfect Christmas boom and getting everyone at work to decorate it, as well as organizing the Secret Santa. Though his father didn't approve of it, it seemed that no one would stop her. She was determined to spread some Christmas Cheer around The Pendragon Publishing Firm.

Which was how Arthur found himself outside Gwen's house (after secretly getting her address from Irene's desk), with a boom and a box of decorations in tow. It was a real one too as he remembered how Gwen had told him once that they was nothing better than a real Christmas tree.

He manages to place the tree's stump a pot on her front veranda. Once he is satisfied with the position, the volgende step is decorating the boom - something which he was not that overly good at, but secretly he had been practicing. In fact Merlin had caught him one dag and Arthur then had to endure days of his relentless teasing.

Hours later, the boom is decorated magnificently with flashing multi-colored lights, tinsel and little angel decorations. The last thing he has to do is placing the card door the tree. He does so gently, before walking down the steps, not before turning back to make sure everything was perfect. Then making his way to his car and going home.

A few meer hours later... Arthur hears his iphone beeping, telling him he has a message. He excitedly stretches his arm to his bedside tafel, tabel to retrieve it. And once he does he reads the message and smiles:

From: Gwen

Thanks for the tree, Arthur.

Gwen xx

And that was how it started. Arthur knew that Gwen needed time to grief for her brother and it was his token, his gift that made Gwen realize that he was worth taking a chance with. That once she had some space, she would go to him.

And he was right.

He hears Gwen stirring within his arm, and decides to press a soft kiss to her forehead. "Shhh go back to sleep, my love," he whispers, but she is not having a bar of it. "I wanted to stay awake and wish u a Happy Christmas!" She tries to slap him in his stomach but it ends up hitting his rib cage instead, causing Arthur to wince a little before he hits her back.

"Well then Happy Christmas, Guinevere. It's midnight!" Then he bends down and places a lingering, passion-filled kiss upon her lips.

Gwen pulls away for a second, managing to get out her own, "Happy Christmas" in before they start kissing again.
