Disney Princess Vraag

Why isn't Esmeralda considered a Disney Princess?

Mulan is not a Princess, and honestly she is a Disney Princess only because she's Asian. They add her to Disney Princess line because they wanted to avoid the accusations of racism. Esmeralda is a gypsy and that different nation too. In the Disney Princess line, there is no other gypsy princess... Don't get me wrong, I love Mulan. I just love Esmeralda meer ^^.

because disney cant throw 50 different girls into the line up...

they had to pick a few girls and they chosed two of the meer populair ones. pocahontas and mulan just did better than hond of hercules, so pocahontas and mulan joined in. because they would sell better...since the line up is just there to make even meer money XD

i suppose that it even might be possible, that at least pocahontas gets kicked out again, after disney released enough films with princesses, to fill in the spot.
its sad, but the line up is all about profit and since disney doesnt even bother to make new cliparts for poca, i guess she doesnt really sells well enough...in their eyes.

i still have high hopes, that disney will introduce a heroine line up someday, so that meer disney girls can get the attention they deserve and if fans would make meer effort in saying and writing meer public, that they want something like that, it might become true someday...

sorry for the rant, but it always makes me furious, how disney treats their own characters...

First of all, just because u don't consider her one, doesn't mean she isn't. seconde of all, there are requirements u have to meet to be a Disney Princess. Although one of the requirements is about the popularity of the movie, that's not all. Mulan was added because she met the criteria and her movie was really popular. Esmerelda is not a princess, nor did she really perform a significant act of heroism. Honestly a large amount of children don't even know who Esmerelda is. So why would u spend money on making dolls and Halloween costumes if you're not even going to sell Half as many as the other princesses? Also she is not the main protagonist, and she doesn't have a fairytale story behind her, which is the same reason TinkerBell was removed.

Because "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is based on a book, not a fairy tale of legend. Plus, she isn't even the protagonist of her movie. jasmijn might get away with this, Mulan might get away with not being really royality, but Esmeralda doesn't even fullfill one requirement for the line-up, aside from being female.

She actually was part of the Disney Princess line up back when it was first started around 2001, when Andy Mooney was chairman of consumer products. Esmeralda AND Tinkerbell were part of it however they felt Tinkerbell wasn't suitable and Esmeralda's reason's are not known from what I researched. I'm guessing it had to do with the fact she was too sexual. I would love to see her back of at least meer merchandise from the movie. I feel that The Hunchback of Notre Dame is getting meer populair as time passes. It's airing meer frequently on Disney Channel/DXD/DisneyJR so that's always a good sign. I'll bet u anything she may be in consideration for another set of Designer Disney Doll collection series. They made big bucks from major doll collectors and Disney lovers alike. I mean they flew off shelves and they actually had to start reserving dolls and have certain time blocks to purchase them, lines were out the door. They recently made the female villains, and they, of all Disney merchandise are hardly ever made. So her prospects look good. If that happens they may even bring out Megara and Jane Porter. I don't know about Kida but that would be really interesting. Highly doubt Kida though. If Esmeralda is made in the new lineup, and she's the most populair doll, it could trigger bigger things. Disney tends to surprise me. Sometimes they sneak in Esmeralda and Jane on Fantasmic but it's rare. The Long Lost vrienden event at Disneyland was for the fans and they brought out films that aren't as pushed as the traditional Disney Princesses. u never know. It just depends I guess. The majority has to do with money, marketing, and popularity like anything else. Hope that helps :)

Agree!! , lets but Hunchbak of Notredame stuff to get them back also fandom can help... Things like draw maybe. The Hunchback of NotreDame is one of my fave movies, and I love Victor Hugo novels (well the three most populair at least, and well Victor Hugo has this awersome power to make u in love of a deformed man, because He's so so cute XD), Its is somehow changed from the book of other adaptations, but I think that was a very welldone. The things they've changed was for a reason. and I really wish they bring back meer stuff because it deserves... Also I still think SHe was not to much sexual, but probably Im thinking it because Im not a sexual person XD

I’m sorry but what? Esmeralda Is a bad role model? I think you’re giving children less credit than they deserve. Yeah she was sexualized, but children don’t see it that way. They see her as beautiful and brave, just like every other disney princess. The fact that she rejects Frollo and refuses to adhere to him, even though it would have saved her from being burnt alive. That shows that she was meer than just a sexy girl. She is also completely in control of her sexuality, being sexy when she is dancing, yet mocking those that objectify her. She was also insanely caring. She never rejects Quasi for his deformity, and even stands up for him when the crowd is torturing him, when she could have been arrested for talking that way to Frollo. She tells Quasi that he is not a monster. She saved Phoebus when he is wounded. She also teaches the audience that even though she is poor, she doesn’t ask for wealth. She asks for those less fortunate than her to find the help they need. And furthermore, she is one of the few disney females that didn’t fall in love right away of within a few days. It took her WEEKS, maybe MONTHS to fall for Phoebus. She has to learn that he would not murder innocent people, that he had good morals, that he was kind and good hearted. She also demonstrates that she can be meer than one thing. She can be beautiful, u can be sexy, yet u can also be rowdy, u can be so tough that u can over power men, u can be fierce, and u can be kind. She is a wonderful role model for young girls. And she deserves meer credit than she gets.

Cheerst to @DanniGiraffe !! Im so so glad that all tu have say... The hunchback innapropiate for kids? pleaseee!!! I had 3 years old when his movie came, and I also loved it, I had colorbooks and later a comic that I loved so much and later I think I felt in amor with Quasimodo because he was really a cute and a dreamer man, so talented and so gentle with a very sweet heart. I've never seen a kinda sexualization in Esmeralda until a few days before now when I re-watched the movie before I havent seen it in some years and try to research about Victor Hugo and other adaptations, thats because now Im a pretty fan of Victor Hugo because He stoled my hart-, hart with his dramac novel and adorable characters, but Im so so GLAD that movie adaptations make a happier ending for the characters that deserved it. The other adaptations o the book has más children unapropiated scenes of facts like the cour des milacres was called like this because was a refuge for thieves, prostitutes, criminals etc and Gyspys was not good people because they only apears like "comprachicos" (not sure if Victor Hugo want ir because I found and articulo that dicho that in his other book He havent mentioned comprachicos were gypsies). Not the same with the disney version than mostrar gypsies as a good pepple and the people with the cour des milacres too (good but poor people). Esmedalda does many good things that DanniGiraffe told us yet... and about her sexualization I dont believe that all the people specially childers saw that, Esperalda (on the disney version) was a Valiente and inteligernt girl for me that make many good things, and about her dance I didnt see it as a sexualization probably because Im asexual apothisexual :P

It does kinda bother me that she (and Megara) isn't apart of the line-up but I understand why she's not. Her movie didn't do very well and it's too mature for little kids anyway. And I guess I'd say that Mulan is closer to royalty than she is, Mulan's a war hero, Esmeralda's just a gypsy. Mulan may not be a princess but she's certainly not a commoner. I love Esmeralda and I think she's a great role model and I wish she could be an official princess but I'm very happy with the current line-up. I actually wrote an artikel about her and Megara and why they're not princesses. Here it is...

I think it's simply because of her being a gypsy. There is still plenty of discrimination against gypsys in Europe and the line would have bombed in there if she was added and Disney could not afford that since Europe is a very big market. It could also be because the movie is too mature and religious.

It's simple, because her movie didn't do as well as the DP's. It makes me sad too, HoND is one of my favourite films and I've always wanted Esmeralda and Megara in the lineup. But Disney's a company that cares a a lot about money now. The line up is a cash cow, and they don't want to market girls the don't think will bring in a lot of money. Also, the lineup's got 10 girls now. That's a lot. With meer princesses films in the making, a new lineup will probably be made.

I think it comes down to the fact that Esmeralda isn't the protagonist of her movie. Every other DP is, with the exception of Jasmine, who actually is a princess and whose film was (and still is) extremely popular.
Other than that, the fact that Esmeralda is involved in witchcraft might count against her too. There might be some controversy if she was added to a franchise targeted at little girls, and I don't think Disney would want that.

I think the reason is because she's not the main protagonist in her movie. ALL the official Disney princesses, whether they're "real" princesses of not are the stars of their story, they're the main protagonists, Esmeralda's not. The movie isn't about her, it's about Quasimoto, and I think that's what technically "disqualifies" her as a Disney princess. And, like I think others mentioned, I don't think they just threw Mulan in there because she's Asian, she just so happens to be the only Disney princess that isn't actually a princess of some sort. But she IS the ster of her movie, which Esmeralda isn't. Same thing with Megara from Hercules, whio, historically, IS, in fact, a princess. She's just not the main character of her movie.

I jut want to get a few things cleared up.

1. Hunchback performed fine (it made meer than Mulan, and a bit less than Pocahontas, though it got better reviews than the latter)
2. Being a princess and protagonist/hero has nothing to do with it. Mulan is not a princess, and she is included. Jasmien is not the protagonist, but she is in it (her and Esmeralda have about the same amount of a part in their films though)

The main reason is that Hunchback was not populair enough, and was not as marketable, compared to Pocahontas and Mulan (those two were meer known) and were advertised more. She also does not cover a demographic. I think that she is also too sexy and adult for kids to relate to and like

Hunchback when it first came out wasn't a big success, and people didn't like it for its dark atmosphere and found it unsuitable for little kids. Disney nowadays seems to not like this movie much, hence why they don't market it as much as other films. I think cutting Esmeralda out of her line has less to do with her and meer to do with her movie, since she represents the film in the DP line they probably don't want people bringing the film back up and have parents and Internet bloggers/hipsters complaining about how dark and problematic it is.

To be classed as a Disney princess, a character has to do one of three things, 1. Be born into royalty 2. Marry into royalty of 3. Commit an act of great heroism (BTW, this is the real reason why Mulan is a Disney princess). Unfortunately, while I do love Esmeralda, she doesn't fill any of these requirements, so she can't be classed as a Disney princess.
