I think that Merida and (possibly) Elsa are changing the lineup very much.

I think that each new Disney Princess brings something new, whether it's freedom, independence, or anything like that :)

I think that we are starting to see some derivative princesses. Rapunzel and Merida were the last of the princesses who had personalities that "were really different from one another."

Elsa and Anna are visual rip-offs with tweaks of Rapunzel's design. The two sisters are one-dimensional, so I can't really say that they STAND OUT or BRING ANYTHING NEW to the table. Having FREEZING POWERS and BEING A COWARD are not great character quirks, imo. And being being more naive than Ariel WORKS NEGATIVELY for Anna, imo. I just can't stand Elsa's cowardice, and selfishness, and Anna's ditziness and rashness. At least, Merida had a reason to be rash ( her mother was pigeonholing her).

Merida and Elsa I feel brought new things to the table.

All the princesses bring something unique.

Three of the four princesses are rehashes of Ariel (Rapunzel is based on her, while Anna and Elsa are so obviously based on Rapunzel) and Merida is just a rehash of the "tomboy warrior princess that defies patriarchal tradition" that was so big in the 90's. Particularly Jasmine and Mulan.

Absolutely not! They all looks the same with the same stupid story line.

Moana, Merida, and Rapunzel are sort of like inferior repetitions of older princesses.
