Interview: Drew Roy Talks Falling Skies Final Season
The final season of Falling Skies promises to bring the action throughout the entire season, but who will survive and who won’t? Today we had a chance to talk with Drew Roy, who plays Hal Mason, and discuss what the series has meant for him as an actor and what we can expect for his character and the story.
Going into the 5th and final season, Hal has a lot of trust issues when it comes to his brother Ben and his girlfriend Maggie. For those that don’t remember, Ben saved Maggie’s life by giving up some of his spikes to heal her injury from a recent attack on their location. The side effect was of course strength and abilities like what Ben has, but also that Ben and Maggie share an emotional connection. The result was Maggie and Ben kissing, and tensions between the 3.
Hal does have some trust issues and they are pretty well founded. Hal figured if these two were going to be paired up and they were going to be with each other that Hal was going to have some fun with it and make some comments. I enjoyed playing a little comedy with Hal. At the start of season 5 Hal makes one final attempt to sever the relationship between Maggie and Ben, and he has been nothing but the puppy chasing after his girlfriend. He has finally matured enough to decide I have done everything I can and I will let you (Maggie) choose for yourself.
Will Hal regret the way he treats Ben or Maggie over this complex relationship?
Perhaps, but in Hals mind it’s not cruel and he feels that asking Maggie to break off any relationship with Ben is founded given Ben seems to be trying harder at it then she does.
As the series comes to a close and your characters story arc is wrapped up, how do you feel about the way your characters story ended up? Are you happy with where they took it?
I am pretty happy with where we got Hal. I can’t say it always went the way I wanted, but I went along with it. This was my first series and I didn’t even know what I was doing those first few seasons. The thing I played off of was by playing into the recklessness of Hal and giving him somewhere to go to mature he has become a man who people come to for answers over the past 5 seasons. He is not just a guy who is only concerned about his family and thinking with his heart more than his head.
The way everything wraps up, I think there is a bit of a shroud of mystery about it that I think is interesting.
Will fans get closure at the end of the season? Happy/sad ending?
That is a difficult question to answer (spoilers!). However there will be answers. Everyone has been curious, myself included, about why these aliens were here in the first place. That will be explained in the final episode. Is it happy or sad? I don’t think its black and white, its more a shade of grey of what actually does happen. But if you are looking for answers there will be answers given.
We saw an emotional video from Colin about saying goodbye to Falling Skies. What has the series meant to you over the past 5 years?
LOS ANGELES – JUL 24: Drew Roy arrives at TNT’s 25th Anniversary Party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on July 24, 2013 in Beverly Hills, CA
This was my training ground. I came into Falling Skies with some skills of my own but being around many of these seasoned actors and actresses who have been around so many huge projects, I was able to sharpen my skills and hone them. That was a blessing I was able to get out of this. You can be in classes every day, all day and it is just not the same as being on set with people like that. I feel like leaving the show is like leaving behind those friends and people you spent all this time with in high school that you saw every day and now you won’t see them every day and it becomes harder to make an effort to go and see them because they are not with you on set every day. So many of us on the show are very close, like a family. It will be odd not flying back to Vancouver this fall like I have for the past 5 years.
All of us are sad but excited to see how they finish the season. For all of you going to San Diego Comic Con this July, expect to see Falling Skies cast members there for a final panel and sneak peek of the final season as they say goodbye to the series. To all the Drew Roy fans, fear not he has many other projects (including Indie) projects coming out so this won’t be the last time you see him on your TV screen.
