I like it but Im a bit disappointed in general.

Like if this is my lifetime savings after 4 years and all yet I still cant afford somethings, is kinda like... eh. That plus the lack of "HTML design" that they mentioned before and that the "Top Gold Producers" make absolutely no sense (cause somethings dont even have one fan on it).

But I figure since its just the first launching of it, there will be repairs and edits and its still a pretty cool concept.

Its just a bit below the hype and my mild saltiness about not being able to afford as much as I expected aside, its pretty cool. Could use some fixing though, but you cant expect too much from the first launching.

I really interested on seeing further gold-related updates though. I probably wont buy jack squat for a while though.

Atm I'm slightly obsessed with it, checking the total every few seconds and with every new contribution. I think that'll fade though.

Hi all, to clarify, the earnings you currently have are only from the last 6 months when we started turning on Gold tracking. All of your contributions from day 1 can earn Gold, but we had to write the tracking code and turn it on 6 months ago before it would start tracking.

In other words, you can expect to earn roughly your current balance every 6 months if you simply make one contribution a week :O to collect from all of your old contributions. You can of course also make more if your new contributions are valued by the community, as well.

Riku114, the Top Gold Producers is working correctly. Just keep in mind that there are many factors taken into account for Gold calculations.

I'm one of those people that needs a couple days to adjust to new things so I'll let you guys know when I've thought it over.

@CokeBoy Give them time. They arent just gonna put EVERYTHING in at once. They are still working on a lot of thigns if you look at the article and what they gave us this time. It just means there are more updates to come in the future.

If thats the case, let me change to "I like it" real quick. Its REALLY good for a kick off.

CokeBoy97, Fanpop chat is already up and running for engineering, and we use it for some team meetings :D

It's much better than the old system, will work on the new Fanpop mobile app + web site, and will stick around for sure this time since we run it 100% in-house. There are private 1-on-1 instant messages with optional sound notifications, and group chat rooms with options to use Gold to make your own pop-up group chat rooms anywhere. It's also easy to turn off if you don't feel talkative atm.

Users can also make a separate chat friend list so that they don't get flooded with thousands of fan messages. The beta version with a smaller feature set will be ready by this summer!

@Riku I'm still curious as to how much I'd have if the system came while I was in my article making prime lol!

I think that bringing back the chat system may help bring back activity to the site hopefully.

zanhar1, you're spot on. Your contributions from 2008 can and will still earn gold if they are popular today, which is often the case.

It's just that we can't go back to 2008 to re-track all of the billions of user actions on everyone's contributions to figure out the Gold earnings for each day in 2008, 2009, etc. If we had that time machine, we'd also stop bowl cuts and banger chains, but that's a different story.

@Zanhar XD Same. I actually saw yours and was like "Zanhar can sill be in four digits" XD You are like the first person I went to see the gold. Makes sense if its only 6 months though. Also it explains why it took so long to be put up. Sounds like they were waiting for some people to have gold build up.

@Fanpop Honestly things have been getting really hard to keep active, particularly since Im busy with school and thus havent had much time to think about how to get Random club back to its normal hype, but I can definately see the gold and chat doing quite a bit of work to get this place alive again. I am hype. I am like... so so hype.

@fanpop That's what I thought. I know my Bellatrix article still seems to be doing well which is cool since it was one of my first ever articles.

I figured that was the case and I don't expect you to do that. I'm satisfied with what I've got; it was enough to put my favorite characters all over my profile lol. I support that kind of use of a time machine. x3

With that kind of effort ya'll deserve the appreciation the gold is getting!

@Riku *Feels special* But yeah I think that's a good number with in the past six months especially since I haven't been as active lately. The number looks good to me. I also feel like the reason it took so long is because they wanted the count to be accurate and as unflawed as possible for a new feature.

One last thing regarding the animated banner prices... yes, they are high. Unfortunately, animated banners actually seem to slow down people's computers quite a bit since the browsers need to work extra hard. Loading times also slow down.

We wanted to have it as an option, but we can't have everyone running a massive 15 megabyte banner, at least not until we roll out Rose Colored Glasses, so the best option was to make it expensive to make it uncommon.

Believe it or not, there is an animated background image/wallpaper option in the code, but it's not turned on as we're not sure if people's computers would implode and some people really value fast page loads. Let us know how you all feel and we'll definitely take it into consideration.

@Zanhar Yeah that as well XD I think mine is about accurate as well. Particularly since I havent posted an article in a while as Ive been working on my 100th article XD

Regarding the animated background I definitely worry for my computer; it's like...as old as my account lol and may or may not be blue screening. #NeedsANewComputer It can handle banners but whole backgrounds may not work well with it. Of course I'm just one user though.

@Riku Yeah I need to get back on articles; I have like 3 pending and about 4 ideas down just on paper. Plus I want to get back into fics!

Right now, since we're still in beta, it's limited to clubs with over 5000 fans. If you have a yellow medal or higher, you can start a poll for new club artwork right where you'd normally edit a club (there are three new buttons there in the upper right corner below the fan count).

Can these things expire or can you lose the gold if you don't use them? Cause' the stuff sounds nice but personally I'm not sure if I want it mainly because I don't know what it looks like. I don't want to spend something then find out it's not very good but also I hate to lose the gold just because I didn't spend it.

^ It shows you a preview before you actually buy the things like the background image and banner. I adjusted it like 3 or 4 times before actually buying it.

It's not very exciting yet, but that's because they've only just started it. I kinda have high hopes and might change my answer to "I like it" within the next few days. I'll see how it goes.

I'm just glad that the gold feature is not ruled by the amount of "fan of it" that a certain contribution has, for me that is the best way to avoid cheaters

Anyway, I'm really enjoying what people are doing with their pages and I love that we're finally getting the presentation sorted out on spots that are missing icons and banners. So I'm already convinced that I love this feature.

I've not had a chance to really utilize it yet as I don't have enough of it but it seems like a fun concept.
My only complaint is that it doesn't also buy name changes.

I wish everything I contributed over the years earned gold the same way my new contributions do. But I understand the difficulty Fanpop would have had calculating all that.

I haven't spent any of my gold yet, though I'll probably get a profile banner eventually.

^The old stuff can still earn gold, if it's still popular. Some of my gold producers are items I added years ago. What the F4 can't do - because it'd be insane - is go back and count up every view, every fan, every comment, from the moment each contribution was initially added.

@Flickerflame: Yes, I understand that. Unfortunately, my main fandom, The Penguins of Madagascar, has been dying on Fanpop (and everywhere else) the past few years.

Yeah it's much harder to earn gold and medals now because of the decrease in activity site-wide.

It's nice to be able to personalise our profiles with banners and wallpapers. I also like being able to vote on club appearances, but I'm not sure if the 5 gold voting price actually achieves anything - I don't think it's high enough to be a deterrent if anyone wanted to spam vote, but then if it was high enough for that it'd deter genuine voters too.
