Harry Potter Vraag

What exactly happens when u put u thoughts into a Pensieve?

So if u put a thought into a Pensieve, do u still remember it? Obviously, Dumbledore still recollects the memories of Voldemort he shows in HBP, but then why did Snape use it for Occlumency? It says he did to protect memories he didn't want Harry to see, so that must mean they're no longer in his head right? It's just a little confusing. Can anyone shed a little light on this?

I don't think Severus forgot the memory ("Amusing man, your father, wasn't he?").

The Pensieve is used to de-clutter the mind, as well as allow someone to view the memories inside it. I think Sev used it in an attempt to de-clutter his mind - to make those memories less vivid and allow his mind to focus meer fully on other things.

So are the thoughts any harder to remember?

I think they would be harder to remember unless the person went to the Pensieve to look at it.

Very good explanation indeed, bri-marie. I think the memory must be harder to access in one's mind once it has been put into a pensieve. It is less vivid but still present yet less easy to access from a possible intruder. I would not be surprised if he put his thoughts into a pensieve so that the Dark Lord would not access them through Legilimency either. A very vivid, emotional thought must be very easily accessible, as it is at the forefront of all of our thoughts. That's something we can experience in our daily life too.
