But som of the things you said are contradictory, Damon only does what ultimately keeps her safe, you can say what you want but you can't ignore the fact that damon loves elena and will do everything to keep her alive. Oh and, if you remember, damondid want to put himself in place for the sacrifice but his blood was tainted.

AudreyTribbiani @ DelenaDiaries Don't get me wrong, I love Damon. I think it is such a deep and intense character that makes the story so passionate. He's hot as hell, and knows how to let go and be fun(contrary to Stefan). But we can't overlook the fact that Damon is a selfish being. He only cares about Elena and Stefan off course, and won't give a rat's ass about any other of Elena's loved ones. He might be the one who keeps her alive, but the meaning Elena finds in life is deeply rooted in her loved ones (her parents, Jeremy, Jenna, Bonnie, Caroline) and that's why loss is so unbearable to her...until she meets Stefan....Stelena forever, and I love Damon

Delenaforever13 I have a question though @AudreyTribbiani: When was Damon selfish with Elena? He told her that he couldn't be selfish with her in Rose in the second season. Said his brother deserved her, not him. Granted yes he hasn't broken the sire bond yet but he sent her away from him to please his brother. Could Stefan have done it if he were in Damon's shoes? Stefan didn't think about his brother's feelings at all when they found out what Damon would need to do to break the sire bond. All he cared about was whether or not Elena could choose HIM again. Damon wouldn't even be an option anymore for Elena because he'd have to leave. He'd get to suffer but Stefan wouldn't. I'm not here to insult, just to ask you to explain. What did he do that's so selfish? If you're going to call Damon selfish call Stefan selfish too because he is. They both are. Lastly, I'd just like to point out the one person who has always come through for Elena when she needs him has been Damon, last time I checked. I'm not saying Stefan wasn't there but he was willing to throw Elena anyway, more than once. He threw her away to save his brother without consulting her so don't tell me he respects her decisions or choices after that because he made that choice without her. Then he was willing to forget everything they've ever gone through just to avoid the pain of heartbreak. I liked Stefan, I was a Stelena shipper, and I respected his character up until this last episode because that shocked me. I didn't think he'd be so willing. I was a Stelena shipper so I'm not trying to bash just ask.

As I said before Damon Salvatore is a complex character that adds depth to the story in so many levels. I don’t know why you are challenging me as if I were a Damon hater. But Stefan, as a character is so much more worthy of Elena, as it has been stated by Damon himself! Yes both characters have their flaws and qualities, but the good qualities are more of a trait portrayed in Stefan than Damon. Stefan has a pure heart and you can hardly say the same about Damon. As simple as that, this is the reason why I believe in and support Stelena wholeheartedly. It is not the fact that I want Stefan and Elena together. It’s the fact that I believe Stefan’s nobility is worthy of about anyone his heart desires. The appeal in the characters of the Vampire Diaries is there is no absolute evil or goodness. Every character on the show has a dark side, that outshines a very noble counter-part. The crucial difference in what we distinguish as villians in the show, are those who act selfish and are moved by selfish desires as opposed to those who are selfless souls and only get in touch with their vampire sides because they have no choice, and not because they just think its fun to kill and inflict pain. Stefan is probably the epitome of selflessness and if you can’t see this, then we must have been watching different shows because it has been specified by the producers, writers characters and actors that Stefan is a pure, selfless soul . You need to reread what I wrote closely. I did not say Damon was selfish with Elena. Overall he is not, because he “loves” her, but he hasn’t been absolutely selfless when it comes to her. For instance, he doesn't want her to take the cure, knowing Elena always dreaded becoming a vampire, and dreamed of living a normal, happy human life. I also said Damon cared about her, as this is painfully obvious when the series develops. The problem with Damon is he is a selfish being, not necessarily with Elena but overall. She described him in many occasions as a “self serving psychopath with no redeeming qualities” As much as Elena later brings out his good side, this evil trait is at the core of his personality. This is shown through endless actions. The one I was most disgusted about being him having so little regard for human life. Did you forget he killed Jeremy in s2? FREAKING JEREMY, ELENA’S BROTHER JEREMY. You are right Damon is not selfish with Elena(most of the time), but he is with the rest of humanity and that can’t be called selfless now can it? Damon is a murderer(Vicki, Alaric, Lexi, Bree, coach Tanner and the list goes on…), a rapist(Caroline? Andie?) a compulsive and impulsive being driven by his selfish desires, I.e. his infatuation with Katherine, which he has managed to transfer into Elena. That’s what I don’t like about Damon “falling in love” with Elena. It doesn’t seem realistic to me. It seems like Damon spent 145 years obsessing over Katherine , just to find out she couldn’t care less. He was deeply hurt and think about it, when did he start falling for Elena and caring for her? S1 when he discovers Katherine is not in the tomb and she didn’t come looking for him either. So what does he do, he translates those feelings to a better version of Katherine, which is Elena. And this implies siding with Stefan as well; this is the point where Damon gets back in touch with his humanity. You know, you can really tell A LOT about who Stefan and Damon were as humans. After all, turning into a vampire implies magnifying the highlights of a persons soul. As a human Stefan had endless good qualities and he was a truly pure being. Probably due to his catholic upbringing, Stefan developed notable qualities from a very young age. In 1864 we are shown the human Salvatore brothers and we can tell a lot about their personalities and backgrounds from these flashbacks. Stefan was compassionate, kind, noble, honorable, intelligent, athletic, responsible, academic, dutiful, a true gentlemen. He was admired and respected by townsfolk, and specially his father Giuseppe. His dream of becoming a doctor shows his compromise to helping others. He wanted to help the suffering people have no control over. When it came to love and family, he was loyal and loving. These can be seen through his relationships with his brother who was his best friend, his father who he strived to please and make proud, and with his mother, who he was very close to with but unfortunately she passed away. Endless, endless qualities can describe human Stefan: happy, optimistic, lighthearted, respectful, chivalrous, his life was ruled under a very admirable code of morals and ethics. His dream profession shows his compassion for people and high regard for human life. When he discovered what Katherine was, although he had confessed his love to her and she had fallen for the piece of heaven that is Stefan Slavatore, he could not accept her lifestyle and Katherine had to compel his love. Unlike Damon, who knew exactly who she was and what it implied…killing, hurting innocent people…but he didn’t care, he only wanted to be with the devil Katerina. Stefan was much harder to convince, as he despised the pain and slaughtering of innocent people, unlike Damon who again shows extreme egocentricity and no regard whatsoever for human life. Stefan was only 17 years old, but he displayed maturity, responsibility and has wisdom beyond his years. Stefan has always been what you can call an “old soul” . Damon on the other hand was selfish, heartless(how could he accept Katherine knowing who she was and what she did?) had no regard for human life whatsoever, and his last moments of his life were filled with a poverty of heart that continues to annoy me. He resented Stefan for being loyal to his father and betraying the monster that was Katherine Pierce. He was selfish, wanted Katherine all to himself, was ruled by a vengeful unforgiving nature when he turned into a vampire claiming what? That “he hated Stefan because Katherine turned Stefan, and it was supposed to be only him.” That’s Damon’s great reason to “hate” his brother and it has ruled his entire existence as a vampire. That’s sounds pretty selfish to me, and it's not even Stefan's fault! Damon had a broken relationship with his father and did little to fix this. He was always a rebel, a free spirit and not exactly for good reasons. He was willing to betray his blood family for Katherine. I think that says enough about his human personality, and can help us understand that he is truly really SELFISH for no good reason! He’s just mean(not totally mean) but mean and unforgiving and impulsive and unethical in my opinion. He has said on many occasions he doesn’t care who he has to kill to keep Elena safe… This bothers me to a huge extent, I’ll explain why. The definition of love for me is the total opposite of what Damon shows. If a person loves me, then he has to understand the well being of my loved ones comes first than my own. That means if Damon really loved Elena he would know that to her, it is much more important that her family and friends are safe first, and this is something Stefan understands really well… Do you know the times when I see how deeply Stefan loves Elena? It’s not when he is protecting her or fighting off compulsion for her. It’s when he is holding Caroline in his arms and telling her that he would never let anything happen to her. It’s when he tells Bonnie to close her eyes and brings her out from a hole she fell into. It’s when he runs into a tomb to save Jeremy knowing that he would never be able to get out. It’s when he offers to switch places with Jenna when Klaus was going to sacrifice her. It's when he saves his brother even when this implies losing the the love of his life. THOSE are the moments that I see what love really is. The type of love where my significant other would care not just for me, but for all the people who are important to me. Because if he truly loved me, he would know how much more important it is to me that my loved ones are taken care of first. That is my definition of love. That paragraph above summarizes what Stefan is for me. The epitome of selflessness, and also it demonstrates what Damon lacks. He has stated and made very clear he will kill and do whatever is necessary to keep Elena alive. I’m sorry to me that is not love, it’s a dependence, a mental illness. Yes, Elena brings out the beautiful qualities Damon has, deeply DEEPLY buried inside that rough shell. But I think that’s not enough. Damon has a lot to work on before he is worthy of Elena. The horrors of his past have to be redeemed through more selfless actions, not only towards Elena or Stefan. He has to learn to respect Elena’s choices because it is HER life and he can not decide how to live it for her. Relationships are built on all different foundations, but the ones that last are built on trust and open, honest conversations. You might want to argue about Stefan’s dark past, his “ripper” personality to refute my entire argument. Well let me answer that with one of my favorite quotes from the series: Stefan(to Emily) : “It(vampirism) feels more like a gift.” Emily: “That will change” Stefan: “Why is that?” … Emily: “Because even in death, your heart is pure, Stefan. I sense that about you. That will be your curse.” –The Vampire Diaries (1X20 “Blood Brothers”) Yes, Stefan has flaws in his personality. Serious, dark flaws. But sometimes it really pisses me off how people are so harsh on him and so forgiving with Damon. Superficial, perhaps? Who knows maybe Damon’s evident sex appeal is irresistible. But I don’t care about that and it is not my point either. I’ve heard comments about Stefan that he is a boring one-dimensional character, which is about the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Stefan Salvatore is probably the most complex character of the show. He is a pure soul stuck in the body of a monster, fighting every day against some very powerful deathly urges. Vampirism is his curse. He dreams of having a human life, because the pain of being a vampire is unbearable to him, therefore, he has fought against the corrupted nature of vampirism every minute of his life. He blames himself for literally everything, and he can’t take something as sickly wrong as killing and inflicting pain on others so lightly like Damon, who claims he can control himself because he "can revel in it; he can make it fun." The killing fun. The feeding on innocent people fun. And then he just shuts down his humanity and everythings fine. But it is not as simple as that for Stefan, nothing is. He is deep and his soul is pure. When he kills, it emotionally kills him inside. The pain, the guilt, it is all unbearable to him. Stefan doesn’t think it is fun to feed and to murder innocent people. Which is why, the only way he can survive is by going to the extremes. Avoiding the pain(he has emphasized so many times how it hurts him to know everything he has done) is the only way that he will stay alive. Either by not killing and feeding on animals, or by shutting it down, turning off the humanity switch and literally not being able to feel the least human emotion. This is, of course, ripper Stefan. Ripper Stefan knows no control, because the blood rush is the “catalyst” that turns off the emotions. The second he stops or gains control, he is letting his humanity in, because if he is letting the victim live he is showing mercy to his prey. And with letting the humanity in, comes the pain, guilt, etc of his human side because he finds no fun in hurting and killing innocent human beings...If he hurts inncoent lives this leads him to suicide because the emotional pain and guilt becomes literally, impossible to live with like in the episode blood brothers, where Stefan decides he wants to give up; get rid of a pain that I imagine is beyond ANY human experience of pain. He is not like Damon who doesn't feel the guilt of hurting and killing innocent people. On the other hand Damon is evil and yes VERY VERY selfish for no good reason! Really, can you even explain to me why he hated Stefan so much? Because Stefan made him turn…he could let himself die if he didn’t want to be a vampire. But a century later he tells Stefan the reason he hated him for over a century was because Katherine turned Stefan too and it was only supposed to be him, Damon. Is that the most selfish, unreasonable argument ever or what? Hating your own brother, who he was best friends with in his human years, for a stupid reason like that? I honestly don’t get it! Damon is clearly an evil vampire for no good reason. His dreadful actions have nothing to do with him being a vampire. Unlike Stefan, Damon justifies his actions with vampirism, he claims it is the nature to kill etc. And he becomes really evil, doesn’t make an effort to fight it, unlike Stefan who fights it with all his being. Damon has been really evil throughout the series and I think it has nothing to do with him being a vampire, because he was not that remarkable as a human being either, although he was the elder brother, a grown up who was supposed to show a lot more maturity than he did. I think Damon being a vampire is an excuse he uses to hide his true self. Because its not as if he was a saint when he was human. I can’t stress enough the fact that no character on the show has an absolute personality type. No one is completely good and no one is completely evil. It's what makes the show so awesome and the characters so relatable. What happens is some characters have stronger morals than others. Some characters are selfless while others are selfish. Different characters found different ways to cope with vampirism. For some it is harder because a vampire feels every emotion much more strongly than he did as a human. I’m not saying Damon is completely evil, or completely selfish. NO. Its not my point, read carefully! He has some redeeming qualities, one way or another he is capable of love. I am specially moved by his relationship with Stefan, I think Stefan is the key to his humanity, because when he first returns, he claims to despise Stefan but soon we learn this is far from the truth, and that Damon’s logic is to be mean to the people you care about, just like a child. He won’t let Stefan die and he saves him on several occasions. It is twisted, but it is still love…a broken type of love…but love after all. So I think Stefan was the key to Damon’s big change through season 1. He was lonely and devastated after finding about Katherine, and Stefan was there for him. And then he let his humanity in, and Elena offered him her friendship, and this was the final transition from evil Damon to good Damon. Of course good Damon still kills people and falls victim of his impulsive explosive character. But we see a change in season two, from that heartless, inhuman Damon to a more compassionate Damon, at least when it comes to Elena and Stefan. What bothers me the most about Damon and Elena together is the origins of the affair. I feel in the beginning it was only sexual tension. Like their first real kiss at the motel. It was a highly sexual scene. And personally, I prefer the emotional bonding that originated Stefan and Elena’s relationship. So yeah, for me emotional value was much stronger than the sexual chemistry that happens naturally between Ian and Nina. Just a preference of mine, and honestly, is anyone else bothered by the fact that Stefan gave up everything to save his brother’s life, and how was he rewarded? His brother seduced the love that he lost. It really bothers me about Damon; he could’ve died if it weren’t for Stefan. And I know Elena tried to fight it, but still. The whole thing is so unfair. Stefan sacrifices to save Damon, while he just gets his way with Elena. Instead of focusing on being a good brother, and helping him get back on track, he seduces Elena. To me it was Damon saying “My brothers finally out of the way, now I can get the girl” considering Stefans great sacrifice for him. It is just unbelievable. But again Damon being selfish old Damon and Stefan being selfless old Stefan. I don’t even down what evidence you have to back up that Stefan is selfish. Damon, yes obviously! He is selfish, hands down. But Stefan? He doesn’t have one inch of selfishness in is body. It’s what makes him so noble and great, and so worthy of any love his heart desires. His brother, despite all the terrible things he has done, it is Stefan we are talking about here. Selfless, noble, forgiving, loving, pure hearted Stefan! Are you heartless? Did you want Damon to die after he showed his humanity in S2? Stefan understands what true love is. True love is literally, putting a person’s happiness and well being in front of your own, always. The only way to save Damon was sadly, to be enslaved by Klaus who compelled and forced him to become ripper Stefan again. He didn’t “throw away” Elena (I cant even believe your choice of words) he was placing Damon’s life in front of his happiness. He had to destroy his relationship, and let go (not throw away) of Elena because when it comes to family, Stefan shows even more compassion and loyalty than he already has. He loves Damon, it is in his core to act this way and I think it was a beautiful sacrifice. It cost him his new life. His love, Elena. His true self. Now the part where you say he sacrificed “without consulting Elena.” This is absurd. What would’ve Elena said… “No, stay with me, let your brother die and don’t go with Klaus.” NO! It was the only way! Do you not understand that? He is willing to give up (not throw away!) everything for his brother! Cause he is that type of beautiful selfless person. This time it had absolutely NOTHING to do with Elena’s choices. This was about Damon's life. This was a matter between brothers and had nothing to do with Elena, it was Stefan shining with nobility and saving his brother’s life in the only way possible. Why would he consult something like that with Elena? I can’t stress this enough, it was Damon’s life, and he would’ve died if Stefan had not intervened. Yes he wanted Rebekah to take away his pain. I don’t see anything wrong with that…Elena, being compelled, told him he no longer loved him, because she was in love with Damon now. All those memories and caring about Elena was tearing him apart and no longer held any meaning for him, honestly Stefan doesn’t need more pain in his life. He has suffered enough and now he has to cope with heartbreak? No way! Why is that so bad? Again, I can see why people consider this was wrong, but can you blame him?! After everything he has been through…can you blame him for not wanting that emotional torture? For not wanting to be more of a martyr than he already is? I think fans are really harsh on Stefan but forgive all of Damon’s horrific actions. Like you pick on this little thing that he wanted to free his heart of Elena because she doesn’t love him anymore and it hurts him! I can’t stress this enough either, it tears him apart! But Damon, he has raped, killed, enjoyed and relished in his horrible actions, but he, he deserves our compassion. He deserves our forgiveness. But Stefan has this little questionable action…and OH he is the worst character on The Vampire Diaries! Well, no. It’s not fair. I will chose Stefan over Damon any day. He is truly a pure heart, who deserves a partner that will fight for him, for that clean and pure soul of his. Anyone who has Stefan’s heart is gifted with real love, Katherine knows this, Elena knows this (cry me a river Delena, Stelena is the endgame of this story) and I really can’t understand why you would give that up to be with a character like Damon, who is not completely evil or selfish but egocentricity is a dominant trait at the core of his personality. Yeah, Claroline didn't like it in the beginning but that was just because she was fucking blind and didn't see how happy Elena was. Bonnie supported Elena the WHOLE time, and she loved them together. Actually, she was the one telling Damon to give the cure to her, so Damon and Elena could be happy. And Alaric, omg. He was the one who said to Damon "you got the girl man." He had hope for Damon since the beginning so uhm, stop saying that all these people ships them. And yeah, Jeremy too. He didn't like it in the beginning but he started tolerating them. Wow!! Why are you trying to make Stefan look like the hero? Yes, Damon did maybe kill Elena's brother but Stefan actually tried to kill HER once. You forgot that?? Mhm.. He drove Elena off the Wickery bridge, just to get back at klaus. While Damon, saved her before that happend, by convincing Klaus for trying to reach Stefan. Stefan has said so many terrible things to Elena in season 3, for example that he wished that they never met&every minute he spend with her was a total waste. And before you're saying that he never did, he actually did. In season 3 episode 7. And before that, he said that he didn't want to see her and that he didn't want to be with her. Stop trying to make STEFAN look like the hero when we both know that he has done a lot of terrible things. If you want to make a point of this, you can at least write down things that actually are true. Oh, and don't forget that Stefan didn't "care" about Elena at all in season 3. He said he didn't want to feel a single thing so he didn't care about her correctly :)) IF STELENA NEVER STOPPED LOVING EACH OTHER THEN WHY THE HELL DID THEY BREAK UP THEN, HUH??!?!! And lmao Stefan has actually been more angry then Damon. Stefan can't control himself at all. Did you forget that part where Elena gave him her blood and he got so addicted to it that he almost did hurt Elena? And in 1x19 where he was becoming a ripper because of that, he missed miss mystic falls, the one thing that did matter for Elena. And who stepped in instead? Damon. So just stop making Damon look like the evil guy when Stefan is actually worse then Damon. Why are you saying that Damon's love never consumed her? In 6x01 Elena actually said "I wanna thank you for giving me everything I've always wanted. A love that CONSUMES me. And passion. And adventure. There's nothing more I've could ever want, other then for it to last forever but I can't." She thanked Damon for giving her what she always wanted. Did she ever have this speech to Stefan? Nope. "Stelena has history together." Uhm okay? So does Elena with Bonnie and Caroline. When Elena said they had history together in 1x01 she meant the SUBJECT history, omg. Stefan NEVER came to mystic falls just to be with Elena. Katherine even said it. He came to mystic falls again because he wanted to fall in love with KATHERINE all over again. While Damon in 1x01 said he came to mystic falls because of Elena. See the difference? When Stefan offered to kill himself for Jenna, and not Damon, you're so wrong. Damon actually went down to Klaus BEFORE Stefan and said that he wanted to take Jenna's place. Stefan gave up after one conversation, but Damon didn't. He went all crazy and said he needed to take Jenna's place just so Elena wouldn't lose another family member. Stefan has made a lot of Elena's choice for her. He started finding the cure when Elena actually didn't want it. Stefan couldn't respect her. Her choice. Her new life. He just went down, kidnapped her brother and made him kill vampires when Jeremy even didn't want to kill them. If their love is so "pure" and "better then delena's" then why can't the other person in the relationship respect the other? Stefan only wanted the cure later in the season because he thought Elena would fall in love with him. He knew that she fell in love with Damon because she loved him before she turned. Her feelings only got magnified. And I mean, Stefan didn't even RESPECT Damon&Elena. He was just hating on Damon for taking his girl. Damon actually respected Stefan when he was with Elena. Actually, Damon was more sad and depressed because he loved Elena but he never broke them up. And before you start saying that Damon kissed Elena and then he don't respect Stefan and blah blah blah: Stefan disappeared the whole summer without saying a single thing to Elena and Damon, he just became "the ripper" again and he just left Damon and Elena worried behind. He said so many awful things to Elena (I said a few of them little longer up" and what does he expect? Elena said it herself. She had hope but she didn't want to wait for him if he didn't get fixed. Elena came to Damon for comfort, and that's not wrong. Damon was the only one who was there for her, while Stefan was too busy ripping people's heads off. I respect Stefan, and Stelena. I tolerate them very much, but when you're re coming here and saying these stupid reasons and blaming Damon for stupid things, I get mad. So you should just start respect people and people's ship, really.

sealinski I agree with this so much! I think that Damon and Elena are like the Harley and Joker of the whole group. To me, it's toxic and unhealthy. What Damon has done to Elena by killing her brother and sleeping with her mother but Elena still dismissed it like it was nothing. I don't like Delena and Delena Shippers seem to be missing the fact that Damon is a abusive rapist who has no self-control and decides that, because Katherine didn't want him anymore, he goes straight for the next best thing. They excuse Damon's behavior, pin him as the good brother while Stefan as the bad one because of his 'Ripper' side. The Ripper!Stefan is completely irrelevant when you look at it this way. Everything Damon has done has been with his humanity turned on while Stefan had to have his switch off for him to start killing anybody or dropping bodies. Damon would kill Caroline, Jeremy, Alaric, Bonnie, and any of Elena's loved one so that Elena could live. To me, that doesn't identify as “true love” but an obsession with Elena so he wouldn't have to live alone. Stefan, on the other hand, (and people can fight me on this) doesn't deserve Elena or Damon. No, it's the other way around. The way that Stefan handled himself while Elena threw herself at Damon (more likely smothering Stefan alive while she makeouts with his brother in front of him) and how she publicly declared her love for him. Yes, Delena shippers will say that Elena loved Damon before the sirebond but she loved Stefan more. Being a vampire heightens everything right? So if she loved Stefan more at the time, how the hell did she come into terms that Damon is her “one true love”? Hint: sirebond. Overall, Delena is a toxic relationship and no one can prove me otherwise.
