Robert Downey Jr was the perfect choice to play the billionaire turned superhero Tony Stark, even if he did have a goatee instead of a pencil-thin moustache.

Modern-day Captain America is a little toned down on the red, white, and blue. The super soldier is also distinctively less blonde than he’s appeared in the past.

The technology of CGI rendered a realistic, if somewhat faded, looking Hulk for the movies. The character looks a lot less cartoony than he once did, which is mostly a good thing.

Another victim to his clothes fading in the wash. Over the years all of The Avengers have received style upgrades to their crime-fighting outfits, and part of that has involved muting the colours.

The Black Widow has received one of the biggest image overhauls over the years. She no longer looks like someone who’s dressed up last-minute for Halloween.

Today’s Hawkeye barely resembles the original character from his first comic appearance. Gone are the cheap-looking mask and overuse of purple, and it’s definitely for the best.

Let’s be honest, no one’s going to question any aspect of Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki. Bright gold horns would look pretty cool though.
