The Office Do u think Pam looks for too much outside validation from people, instead of just being happy with herself and her talents from inside?

Like the comic book she made for Jim for Christmas. Why did she feel the need to show it to anyone else? I know Pam has grown some major confidence, but she still always looks for outside credibility, you don't need it Pam, who cares what everyone else thinks.

That's a good point. I hadn't really thought of it.

She has changed a lot since the first season but you're right, vixie, I do think that she still does like/(need?) getting other people's feedback for things that don't really need anyone else's approval. I think it just shows that she is NOT perfect like so many casual viewers of the show seem to thing - she always has been (and still is) a flawed character. Same with Jim.

Yeah I agree. Jim may have his flaws, but he seems way more confident though. He has had to remind Pam that she never failed at any of her endeavors, that she just has to find her "thing," and do her best. The truth is, it's up to Pam herself to see it.

The reason I asked this question was because I was really trying to understand why Robert California didn't pick her to go to lunch. Then his explanation later hit the nail right in the head and not just with Pam, but mostly all that were left behind. I'm still trying to figure out why Creed was left though.

Poor Pam. Sometimes I wish I could like jump through the screen and just tell her what's up. I'm glad she has gained a lot of confidence, but always looking for outside validation is just going to end up being disappointing in the end and it eventually tears down that confidence over and over to where you have to keep rebuilding it.

Yeah I totally agree and I was thinking about that Chistmas episode and when she gave it to him, she didn't seem to sure, and that one episode where she said "Tell me that Im good at sales." to Jim..has to keep telling her over and over that she isn't failing! Good point Vixie.:)

^ Yes, her asking Jim to tell her that she's good at sales is another one too. It also puts Jim in an awkward position as we know he doesn't want to lie, but doesn't want to diminish Pam's confidence either. I for one would get tired of it, there is only so much someone can do about another person's insecurities.

i think she doess just much as anyone does. i mean, and this is true, just the other day i read an article about the human need for praise. its a natural thing, everybody needs praise. i think she is supposed to represent one of tehe very few sane people in the office and you're supposed to be able to relate to her. but i do see what you mean-- she does ask for outside validation like all the time and she could be a little more confident, especially after she had that supposedly major boost in season three or four or whenever that was.
