Portgas D. Ace (ポートガス・D・エース, Pōtogasu D. Ēsu, renamed to "Portgaz D. Trace" in the 4Kids dub), nicknamed "Fire Fist Ace" (火拳のエース, Hiken no Ēsu, "Trace Heat Fist" in the 4Kids dub), is Luffy's adopted older brother and the commander of the seconde division of Whitebeard's pirates. Though it is implied at first that his father is Monkey D. Dragon, his actual father is Gol D. Roger. Rejecting his biological male parent, he only recognizes Whitebeard as his father and took the surname of his mother, because he owes her a great debt. To conceal his existence from the World Government, Portgas D. Rouge carried him for twenty months before giving birth. Afterwards, she died from exhaustion. He has the powers of the Flame-Flame Fruit (メラメラの実, Mera Mera no Mi, lit. "fruit of crackle crackle", Flare-Flare Fruit in the 4Kids dub) which allows him to manipulate, create, and transform into fire. Ace habitually falls asleep in the middle of meals of conversations, a trait also seen with Monkey D. Luffy and Monkey D. Garp. His back bears the mark of Whitebeard–a skull with a white mustache superimposed over a manji. The manji was changed to crossbones in the animated version and in later chapters of the manga. Ace was killed door Admiral Akainu when he tried to protect Luffy from Akainu's magma attack, burning his organs to cinder. Ace ranked in the top, boven 10 of both Shōnen Jump character popularity enquêtes since the character's introduction. He is voiced door Toshio Furukawa in the Japanese version of the anime.
