Definitely.

I just feel like male characters in anime always end up written better imo-

It's sad to say but a lot of female characters are just shoved in to fill a role or as moe/sexy eyecandy and nothing else. And when they're attempted to be given "flaws" they only have one or two major setbacks in their personalities that make them unbearable, two-faced, or annoying. :/

That aside, even though most of my faves are male, there are a few female characters I adore. Like Shura Kirigakure and Haruhi Fujioka. Because they're realistic and flawed without seeming bitchy and annoying in doing so. ;v
