[Rolling Stone] Avril Lavigne Cuts Loose in 'What the Hell'

"What the Hell," the first single from Avril Lavigne's fourth album Goodbye Lullaby, has the same magical balance of brattiness and earnestness as earlier hits like "Sk8er Boi," "Complicated" and "Girlfriend." This time Lavigne is singing about wanting to cut loose and misbehave after years of playing it safe. The video gets the tone just right, matching her lyrical sentiment to some goofy sitcom antics.

WhatTheHell muziek Video door Avril Lavigne Debuts At #1 on Popline!!

ny comparisons of WTH to Alice are completely unfounded. We're talking about two different machines, two different contexts, and two VERY different songs. We should all keep in mind the three following things when considering Alice.

1) "Alice" was released and distributed NOT door Avril's record label, but door Walt Disney Records. Record labels don't make a habit of spending lots and lots of money to promote artists not on their roster so for them, getting a #1 single wasn't the most important thing because singles don't really make money. The purpose of the single was to promote the movie and the soundtrack and that's it. It was designed to complement the promotional strategy of the movie. Now in the past these movie singles have done very well. But not too long ago, MTV and other video services realized that door playing the muziek videos for the movie singles they were basically giving away a shit-ton of free advertising to the movies. So they kiboshed the practice and now movie singles get a lot less promotional support from these entities.

2) "Alice" likely would have been pushed a lot harder had Avril not ended up going back to the studio. But once it became clear that her album wasn't going to be out in the Spring, the upside for Avril to be promoting the song with live performances and the likes would have diminished.

3) WTH is a MUCH MUCH MUCH meer radio-friendly song. There's really no comparison between it and Alice in this category. Just keep telling yourself over and over and over again: Rolling Stone, Billboard, MTV, and radio programmers polled in EW magazine all think the song is going to be a hit... AND SO SHOULD YOU!

OK magazine :

AVRIL Lavigne’s new muziek video leaked this weekend and we can’t decide if we like the concept for the pop punk ditty.
The single What the Hell is the first track off Avril Lavigne’s upcoming fourth studio album Goodbye Lullaby.

In the close to four-minute clip, Avril bops around town trying to flee from her “boyfriend.”

It opens up with the singer lying in bed with her male co-star, teasing him as she pushes him out the door.

Wonder how boyfriend Brody Jenner feels about Avril’s cosy scene with the boy.

She told MTV News in the States: “I’m just really excited to be back.

“It’s been a few years, and I’m excited to see that ‘What the Hell’ [is] doing good so far on iTunes and [with] the fans. The response has been really great, so I’m happy.”
