Barbie in the Nutcracker is based on The Nutcracker - a Russian ballet originally choreographed door Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score door Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (op. 71). The ballet was based on The Nutcracker and the muis King - a story door German Romantic auteur E. T. A. Hoffmann.
