Well, everyone likes to hit milestones, 18th 21st birthdays, 1st child, 100th 200th 300th 400th episode of Bones, etc...Why do people celebrate those? We enjoy counting fans because at thousand intervals it's like a milestone for us - tonen us that x amount of other people love this toon as much as we do. We celebrate the fact that people love Bones, just as others might celebrate that they have ran 100m in under 11 seconde for the first time of swam a 100m freestyle under 1 minuut for the first time of got their 50th consecutive A+ (I don't know anyone who's actually done that, but surely there must be someone in the world).
And personally, I don't think it's all that childish - it's just a fun way of everyone gathering together to celebrate that 1 fan that joined and the one after that and the one after that and so on.

i agree totally its not dumb, but maybe they do it for the network, that shows bones, so the people who created it have an idea on how big the fan base is, think of it as a enquête on how many people live in a certain neghborhood like the census beareau does (did i spell that word right hmmm)
