Lance Spiegel has represented music mogul Russell Simmons and actors Heather Locklear and Charlie Sheen in family law issues.
Brad Pitt is enlisting some legal firepower in preparation for a contentious divorce from Angelina Jolie.
Lance Spiegel, a well-known Beverly Hills family law attorney, joined the actor's team Thursday afternoon, a source close to the situation tells
. Pitt continues to be advised by his Hollywood lawyer Alan Hergott and by manager Cynthia Pett.
Spiegel, 70, has extensive experience in family law and divorce cases involving entertainment figures. He previously represented actress-producer Eva Longoria in her split from NBA star Tony Parker and
producer Mike Fleiss in his 2012 divorce. Other clients have included music mogul Russell Simmons and actors Heather Locklear and Charlie Sheen, as well as the late Michael Jackson, according to the website for Spiegel's firm.
Spiegel, a partner at Young Spiegel & Lee, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pitt's team will have its hands full. News broke Tuesday that Jolie, 41, is seeking a divorce from the actor, 52, after being married for a little more than two years. The couple have six children. Pitt's team was said to have been blindsided by the divorce filing by Jolie attorney Laura Wasser. She also is being advised by Hollywood attorney Robert Offer and manager Geyer Kosinski, both of whom have made comments to the press. 
Jolie does not have a traditional publicist, but sources say she is being advised by Chloe Dalton and Arminka Helic. Helic served as special adviser to William Hague, the former First Secretary of State for the U.K. Dalton also is a former aide to Hague, according to the U.K.'s
Since the news broke Tuesday, Pitt has been the subject of several press reports suggesting his bad behavior led to the divorce filing. But Los Angeles police on Thursday told
the department is not investigating Pitt for alleged child abuse, nor has any allegation been made against the actor. (Reports surfaced early Thursday morning an investigation was underway by police.)
"We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing," Sgt. Barry Montgomery told
. "To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up, and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt."
Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services could neither confirm nor deny it was involved in an allegation involving Pitt. "We have very strict confidentially laws that don't allow us to confirm or deny the subjects of our investigations," spokeswoman Amara Suarez told
On Tuesday, Pitt released a statement on the divorce filing: "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
